At 6’1, Hawthorne is a strong post presence and can stretch the floor with her outside shooting with range beyond the 3-point arc. She can play tough defense against opposing bigs, get to the basket off the bounce and has a strong perimeter game and can see over the top of a defense and make smart, on-time passes.
“I think my game is limitless and ever growing,’ Hawthorne says. “I think I’m very selfless and I’ll play whatever role the coach asks me. I also know I step up when the team needs me I love a challenge and feel I do best against the best.”
A year ago, she put together a strong season for Miege as the Lady Stags went undefeated and won a Class 4A state championship. She was a double digit scorer and was named the 4A state tournament’s Most Outstanding Player for her efforts.
Hawthorne followed a strong sophomore season with a big summer with KC Run GMC and says the experience has helped her game grow.
“Summer ball is always great. I play with the best of the best in the class of 2021 and against the best girls,” she says. “I feel playing with Rodney as my coach really prepares me for anything, physically and mentally . He doesn’t limit my ability as a player.”
Hawthorne has since moved to St. James and says she is excited about the opportunity at the new school.
“I’m really looking forward to challenging myself and growing and developing as a person and basketball player, I’m ready to lead this team and push my teammates to be the best we can be as players as a team and have fun,” she said.
Hawthorne says Betty Lennox and Rodney Gilyard have both had a big influence on her basketball career.
“Lennox has always been my developer and my trainer I look up to her,” Hawthorne said. “My AAU coach Rodney Gilyard has also been a big influence on me. I know they both want what is best for me always on and off the court and they push me to reach my full potential.”
Hawthorne says she is a fan of basketball at all levels and studies players and teams in hopes of learning new aspects of the game.
“I consider myself a student of the game, I like to watch everything, college girls, boys, NBA and WNBA,” she said. “I love to watch different players and just watch everyone’s game. No one team in particular.”
Hawthorne has drawn interest from several college programs, including Brown, South Dakota , Villanova, Loyola Chicago, Lipscomb, LaSalle University, UMKC, Southern Illinois University, Stetson University, University of Central Missouri, Northern Kentucky and Maryville University.
