At 5’9, Byers is able to mix things up on the court whether it’s shooting from the mid-range, the 3-point arc, driving inside and finishing in the lane or finding an open teammate. She has a long reach for a guard and her frame allows her to get deflections, steals and get out in transition for easy baskets.
A year ago Helias went 16-9 overall and despite missing the end of the season to injury, Byers averaged 13.5 points and four rebounds as a sophomore. Byers says expectations are high this season.
“We surprised people last year and had a really good year,” Byers said. “Although it was not the ending we were hoping for, we had a good season and fought hard all year … I had a good year and I am excited to build off of it and have a strong junior season.
“We are hoping to have a good year. We only have two returning starters but we have good athletes to come fill the spots. Although we are not tall, we hope to use our speed and quickness to our advantage and run the court. Our goal is to have a good run and make it as far as we can.”
After a summer playing the Missouri Phenom, Byers says she entered her junior season with a lot of experience and an opportunity to expand her game.
“Playing with Phenom is a great experience,” she said. “(The) Phenom gave me the opportunity to play with and against talented players. The coaching staff pushed to improve my game and helped build up my fundamentals. Phenom taught me a better understanding for the game and deepened my love for basketball. I am excited to implement all they have taught me into my high school career.”
Byers says Phenom coach Greg Logsdon has had the biggest impact on her basketball career to date.
“Coach Logsdon believes in his players,” she says. “He never gives up on you and is always encouraging you which has helped me build confidence with my game. He not only teaches me how to play but explains why we do what we do.”
A fan of the Duke men’s basketball program, Byers says she is a fan of head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
“(He) is my favorite coach,” Byers said. “His coaching style inspires me to learn more and work harder. His team is always well prepared and plays smart. I like to study how he teaches the game of basketball and use it in my own game.”
Byers currently holds an offer from Columbia College and recently took a visit to Northwest Missouri State.
