In this article, we take a look at our #16 ranked player for the class of 2022, Sania Copeland. Sania is a 5’7 guard for the Olathe North Eagles and a member of KC Lady Run GMC.
Head Coach Alzono Williams of Olathe North describes her as, “A great competitor and one of the hardest workers, a GREAT kid and GREAT teammates.” Copeland is a crafty land handed guard with the consistent ability to shoot from long range. Good ball handler and can finish around the hope. I did a little Q and A with Sania to get an in-depth look at her and how basketball has been affected her life.
Q:When did you fall in love with basketball?
A:I fell in love with basketball after watching my dad play a few games. Every timeout I was out there shooting. It was about 1st grade and any chance I got, I had a ball in my hand and was actually making shots. I asked my dad to put me on a little rec team and after my first game, it was right then and there I realized basketball is what I love and want to do the rest of my life.
Q: Who are some of you biggest influences?
A: My biggest influences would probably have to be my dad and my best friend S’Mya. My best friend S’Mya is one one because I look up to her. Yea, she may be younger then me but she is one of the best players I have ever seen. Me and her grew up playing with each other and everyday we would push to make each other better. She was always there for me when I needed her and I knew I could count on her for a nice dime. My dad would be the biggest influence in my life, because he wants me to be the greatest. He wants me to be the best. Whenever I have a have a off game, he’s always right there reminding me that I am a great player and I have so much potential. Honestly I can’t do this without him. I love them both so much and wouldn’t ask for anyone else as influences
Q:Who is your favorite basketball player and why?
A: My favorite player for the NBA is Steph Curry and for the WNBA is it Skylar Diggins. I feel like I can play similar to both players. Curry is one of the best shooters in the world, and that’s what I can call myself as I grow up. Right now shooting is definitely one of my strengths, so I think I can do it if I work hard. Skylar Diggins is a lefty like me, and I feel like we can definitely play similar. She’s so smooth and calm with the ball and knows when and how to score. She’s one that I look up to as a women’s role model.
Copeland has entered her sophomore year at Olathe North and is one of the team’s leaders this year. She shares duties of point guard and shooting guard which allows her to work on a different area of her game like distributing when playing the point, or lighting it up from long distance when she is off the ball. I was curious about what some of her goals were this year both for the team and individual.
” My goals for high school basketball right now, is to just play like I know I can play. As a team, a goal id definitely to not only make it to state, but win state. I know my teammates, it’s going to take a lot of hard work and determination, but I know we can do it. My goals for AAU is to make a name for myself, drive when I am open. I want to be the player that my teammates depend on. I want basketball to take me to the highest level of play. I would be so proud and honored to make it to the WNBA. I would say my strengths are shooting, controlling pace, and controlling the game. I believe that I can be capable of scoring when I feel like we need a bucket. One thing I can work on is my defense, like playing without fouling. Another thing I can work on is being more of a leader.”
Sania has helped the Olathe North Eagles to a 7-4 record thus far and continuing to get better every week. Look for her to continue to get better and her stock continue to rise.
