With 46 teams playing in one day it’s almost impossible to see everything. Here is a quick rundown of some of the more compelling things to look for.
This event is usually only open to teams from Maryland, Virginia and D.C., but when you get a chance to bring one of the top players in the county into the building, you do it. Kateri Poole of the South Shore Vikings out of Brooklyn is must see TV, except we won’t have to watch on TV. The Ohio State recruit will lead her squad into an epic battle with Baltimore’s St. Frances Academy. The Panthers feature their own highly touted player in Maryland recruit Angel Reese. There won’t be many seats on court one when this one tips off.
The opening tip for the first game is at 9am and the first game of the day should be an epic battle between two high energy guards. St. Paul’s is led by unsigned senior Destiny Ryles who is capable of putting up huge numbers. She will lock up with Mt. Hebron’s Satori Valentine who is unsigned as well, and a high volume scorer in her own right. This should be a fast paced and interesting match up to start the day.
Immediately after that on the same court, Howard High will put their 10-0 record on the line against Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, a legit IAAM B conference contender. Howard has been playing stifling defense and feature two big time guards in Anii Harris and Marisa Sanchez-Henry who have signed with Salem University and Wagner College respectively. Mt. Carmel has an interesting 6’3′ freshman post in Hawa Doumbaya that I am looking forward to seeing again.
The grand finale on court two features an Anne Arundel County match up between Old Mill and Archbishop Spalding. This one will pack the bleachers as well and is a potential track meet with stellar athletes on both teams.Old Mill brings a frenetic, up tempo pace and is led by Mikiyah Mallett and Bria Gibson. Spalding will counter with the Sims sisters, Koi Sims and Kamari Sims. This is a great way to close the day.
