Both of these squads are among the top teams in their own conference and i was really intrigued to see the match up between 2021’s Kiya Dorroh (Sabino) and Alyssa Brown (Sahuaro).
Dorroh and Brown are both currently in the top 5 in the 2021 class of our PGH AZ rankings. While they are both around 6’1-6’2, they play completely different games.
Dorroh is more of a 2-3, while Brown is more of a 4-5. I was really interested to see how their different play styles would transcend on the court and I got a really good game and a great showing by Kiya Dorroh.
Early in the first, Sahuaro got off to a quick start and pulled away for a bit. However, Sabino really focused in on their press and quickly caught up, making it even after 1 quarter.
Pretty much from then on out, it was Sabino’s game to lose. They controlled nearly every aspect of the game the rest of the way. Sahuaro would go on a run to cut the lead a little bit but then it was usually met with another Sabino run to extend the lead once again.
Dorroh was the player of the game, scoring 20 points and holding Alyssa Brown to 17 points. Brown averages 30 points per game on the season, so containing her and cutting that to a little bit more than half is really impressive. Most of Brown’s points came off of FT’s and Dorroh only fouled twice. Had some of the Sabino girls not come in and reach while Dorroh was playing defense, I think that total would’ve been closer to 10-12 points.
Overall it was a really good showing for both Sabino and Dorroh. More impressive was the fact that Sabino was able to win 51-41 despite missing two of their key players to injury. Kam Rhodes, starting PG, is out for the season. Kadie Healy, starting forward, is out for an unknown amount of time. This really forced some players who usually don’t play too much to step up and perform in a huge game.
