A season and a half later, the Thunderbolts have gone 30-3, with those three losses all coming to Swink in the 2018-2019 season in which the Lions finished as state runner-ups.
Leading the complete, 180-degree turnaround has been Rye sophomore Sophie Adamson.
In her freshman season, she led the T-Bolts in scoring with 11.8 a game, as well as rebounds with 5.2 per contest and also threw in 2.4 assists each night.
Now in her sophomore season, the 5-foot-8 guard/forward has bumped those numbers up to 17.8 points per game, as well as 6.1 boards and 5.1 steals a contest. Her 3.9 assists is second only to her twin sister Sydney Adamson who has 4 assists a night.
“There’s always room for improvement and I feel like there is always someone better than you,” Sophie said. “But really it’s all about the team, I don’t even notice about the whole (top scoring list). It’s all about my team and getting better as a team and making it to where we want to be.”
Sophie’s 17.8 PPG currently ranks second in Class 2A as the Thunderbolts have also risen to the No. 3 ranking due to their 9-0 record this season.
Sophie may appear a little undersized, but she isn’t afraid to battle down low for a rebound or poke away a steal.
On the offensive end, any time she has the ball, it becomes a threat to score as she has the ability to make her own shot and drain it, or find a way around her defender and get to the rim.
Having a strong supporting cast around her helps too in her twin Sydney and Ortiz, who average 11.1 and 12.9 points per game respectively.
Sophie has the court vision to find her teammates streaking down the court or cutting to the basket, making her an all-around threat on offense.
“It’s good being able to rely on (Sophie),” Rye junior Jolee Ortiz said. “You pass her the ball and you already know it’s going in. Being able to trust your teammates like that, it’s great.”
And her speed becomes a problem for defenders as well on the fastbreak, whether that is the basketball court or the soccer field.
In the 2019 season, Sophie was an All-State honorable mention soccer player as she had the most points on the Thunderbolts’ squad with 46 and tied for the most goals with 17.
