St. John’s College travelled to Fairfax, VA to face Paul VI in their first of at least two conference matches of the season. The Cadets were short handed after a conference ruling determined that transfer Gianni Boone will be ineligible for the remainder of the season and junior Azzi Fudd sat out with tendonitis after a grueling three day stretch. Even without Azzi this is still the back to back defending champions in the building.
The Panthers scored first and never gave up the lead. They lead 13-6 after the first and 26-11 at halftime. After the break the Cadets seemed to make a slight defensive adjustment finally figuring out something to offset the barrage of backdoor cuts, down screens and pocket passes. They, however, fell victim the the Panthers pressure defense scoring only two points in the third period. In the end Paul VI had to much fire power for St. John’s to handle, coupled with the fact that the Panther’s got third, fourth and sometimes fifth opportunities to score from offensive rebounds.
Standout Players:
Bella Perkins – 5’9” – Wing – Paul VI – 2021
Bella PerkinsBella led all scorers with 13 points, eight in the final period. She hit a couple of threes and was a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe.
Jaelyn Talley – 6’0” – Forward – Paul VI -2022
Jaelyn TalleyJaelyn had 12 points scoring in each quarter. She had some nice moves in the paint and was able to get to the line. Her ability to stretch the floor to the three makes her difficult for most post players to guard.
Taylor Napper – 6’0” – Forward – St. John’s – 2021
Taylor NapperTaylor gave her all to try and will a comeback. She scored 12 points and got to the line frequently shooting eleven free throws in the game. She showed some good footwork inside and will benefit in the rematch from Aziz’s return.
Caramina Tanedo – 5’9” – Guard – St. John’s – 2020
Carmine TonedoIt was good to see Caramina on the floor together with her sister Isabella Tonedo (2022 PG). Mina looked poised and controlled on the court even under pressure. She only scored 3 points in the game but virtually every basket that the Cadets made went through her.
Meghan Kenefick – 6’0” – Wing – Paul VI – 2020
Meghan KenefickSeemed like every time I looked up Kenefick was making a play, to the point one of my colleagues asked me “who is #30?” She’s a rangy wing with a good mid range touch as well. She showed good anticipation on the offensive glass.
Kelis Corley – 5’10” – Wing – St. John’s – 2020
Kelis CorleyKelis made plays to the tune of 7 points. For St. John’s to make a playoff run she will need to bring it. She shot the ball well, played great defense and hustled but she needs to get the ball in her hands more and be willing to take over to take pressure of Azzi when she returns.
What did we learn?
Paul VI has a team where everyone is a threat, they play disciplined under pressure. St. John’s will have to rebound better or this is gonna be a though rest of the season.
