Here, Prep Girls Hoops takes a look at several 2023 Guards.
Maryn Archer, G, 2023, Derby
A terrific young player for Derby who shows a lot of productivity when on the floor. She’s an active defender, a good rebounder and can get up the floor and make plays in transition. She’s comfortable with the ball in her hands and is a good catch and shoot player from a variety of places beyond the arc. Archer is averaging 11.9 points, 2.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. She’s shooting 43 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range.
Emily Eck, 5’6, G, 2023, Ellis
Another guard on the rise from Ellis, Eck is a welbilt guard who has solid athleticism and a nose for the ball. She’s still young and has areas of her game she’s improving, but she knows how to score and does a little bit of everything on the floor. A scrappy player who uses her size well and just seems to be in the right position to make a play. She’s averaging 8.3 points, 1.3 assists, 1.6 rebounds and one steal per game. She’s shooting 42 percent from the field, 61 percent from the free throw line and 41 percent from 3-point range.
Becca Hajdukovich, PG, 2023, Douglass
Another impressive young freshman guard who handles the ball, looks to distribute and score when she gets an open look. She is great at avoiding defensive schemes and can bring the ball up the floor and avoid problems area of the floor. Hajdukovich is averaging a team-high 16.8 points per game and adds two assists, 2.5 rebounds, 2.3 steals and close to one block. Douglass is in a rebuilding year but Hajdukovich is a reliable piece to the formula that they can build around. A young player who brings a good work ethic and a confidence to the position.
Taryn Sides, 2023, Phillipsburg
A crafty defender who can pick off passes and finish on the opposite end. Sides is a strong, quick player for Phillipsburg who can handle the ball for herself and play off the ball and operate as a scorer. She has great instincts as a defender and also knows how to put herself in a position to score She’s averaging 16.8 points per game and shows a resilience and a high ceiling as an offensive threat, capable of scoring in a variety of ways using her frame and every open look she gets.
Kiki Smith, 5’7, G, 2023, Topeka
An elite scoring option for one of the top overall teams in the state, Smith brings a developed skill set to the floor as she has an ability to change a game as a scorer and defender. Smith is averaging a team-high 21 points per game while shooting 58 percent from the floor. She brings excellent control and ball security to the guard position while still remaining incredibly active as a risk taker and performer who can improvise in a moments notice. Smith can connect from 3-point range and looks for high percentage shots in the mid-range area and through the paint. Smith is also a terrific rebounder and defensive presence on the perimeter and adds 5.4 rebounds and four steals per game.
Mackenzie Walker, G, 2023, Ashland
A strong point guard who looks to score, facilitate and stay involved on the defensive side of the floor. Walker is a reliable freshman who knows her limits and looks to play within her team’s game plan. She has a good sense of floor space in can dribble and create openings and get to the basket and score. She’s averaging a team-high 11 points per game and adds 1.6 assists, 3.2 rebounds and two steals.
