Washington (No. 1 – 6A – 14-2) after losing to eventual champion Classen SAS, Union (No. 6 – 6A – 13-3) looked like a team on a mission. In fact the shooting star of the night for Union, Mae Redmond confirmed as much after the game. “We wanted to be the ones to break their streak,” said the Union head coach’s daughter following the game. “But, it feels even better to give them their second (loss).” Redmond actually began her high school career as a Hornet at Booker T. Washington, but there was no love lost on Tuesday night. Redmond’s 14 points led her team to a 70-53 win in front of a raucous UMAC crowd.

Redmond was unconscious from behind the arc on Tuesday night. She made four three-pointers before deciding to drive the lane and hit a floater for good measure. In possibly her biggest game of the season, Redmond refused to be beaten by her friends on the other side of the court. The 5-5 senior also helped to guard Washington’s superstar Wyvette Mayberry and hold her to 18 points, which actually is an impressive feat. Mayberry may be the best player in Oklahoma and holding her to under 20 points is something that a defensive competitor should be proud of. Redmond is a senior who has not committed yet, but when she does it will not be to play basketball. She is heading to New York soon for a visit to discuss her future playing college soccer.

As a guard at Washington, it is easy to get lost in the shadow of Wyvette Mayberry. On this night, Nunez did more to stand out than she did for possibly the entire Jenks/Union Invitational. Had Union not been absolutely unstoppable shooting the ball, her effort definitely would have led to yet another win for one of Oklahoma’s best basketball teams. Nunez hit two big three-pointers to keep her team in the game, but it was her passing and defense that really made her stand out. The tall, strong point guard did a great job of driving to the basket and finding the open player when the defense collapsed in on her. She also handles the ball very well and dribbled out of many double teams to find the open player. Nunez is one to watch in the run that Washington is no doubt about to take in the state tournament.

Carr stood out in most of the games of the Jenks/Union Invitational and often it was not because of her offense – and that is not a bad thing. Carr is a tenacious defender with a motor that does not quit. She plays with a very high I.Q. and it helps to make up for anything she might be missing physically when facing off with taller guards, like those of Booker T. Washington. On the offensive side, Carr is fearless. She drives the lane with abandon, but is controlled while finishing. She ended the night with five points and probably many thanks from the teammates that she found with passes after drawing multiple defenders on her drives to the hoop. Carr recently committed to Division II Barclay College in Haviland, Kansas.
