Continue ReadingAfter the new year, we plan to start covering the action from the day in a different way than we did in the first half of the season. We noticed that most people did not care to read a singular story on two teams of which they have never heard of, thus the Daily Dive was born. Each night, or following afternoon, we will post a Daily Dive on the previous day’s action with headlines and top performers, given there is enough substance to run one. To follow is our Daily Dive from the games that took place on 1/15/20.
Urbandale controlled the game against Ames
After Ames took down Urbandale a month prior on the road Urbandale looked to return the favor to Ames. As a team, Urbandale shot the ball at a 52.8 percent clip en route to the 54-41 win. Urbandale senior Maya Gyamfi had a tremendous night scoring the ball with 24 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor and she also added six shots from the line. Gyamfi wasn’t just a standout on the offensive end of the floor as she also grabbed 10 rebounds in the game. Ames really had no answer for her all game long. Fellow senior Faith Putz also was effective in the game scoring 16 points and nailing three 3-pointers. Ames continuously took contested shots from beyond the arc as they finished 5-of-24 from beyond the arc. Bradley commit Caroline Waite led Ames with 16 points on 7-for-19 shooting from the field. Teagan Lipsey and Ashley Iiams both added eight points to Ames’ total.
Johnston needs overtime to get past Ankeny Centennial
Johnston rode the hot hand of Northern Iowa commit Maya McDermott to the win on Monday night. In the 62-57 overtime win McDermott had 25 points which included shooting 7-for-11 from beyond the arc, tying a Johnston single-game record for most 3-pointers made in a game. Ankeny Centennial gave Johnston all they could handle before falling in overtime by just five points. McDermott led the team in points but UW-Milwaukee commit Kendall Nead had 19 points while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor. Sophomore Anna Gossling was the third Johnston member in double digits with her 12 point outburst. Western Illinois commit Maddie Mock didn’t get into the scoring column but still was able to provide a much-needed spark with 13 rebounds. Ankeny Centennial was led by Cleao Murray who had 12 points. Closely behind her were Taylor Runchey and Lizzie Strom with 11 points each. Despite being just 6-5, Ankeny Centennial has proven that they belong since they’ve shown they can hang with some of the top teams in the state.
