Neither team was ever able to pull away, and plenty of shots were falling on both sides. In the end, Boone was able to knock down enough free throws late and make some nice defensive plays to put the game away. Here are some awards to show who did what the best.
MVP- Skylar Holder, Boone- While she may not have stood out as much as others on the stat-sheet, Holder had a massive impact on the game. The junior was everywhere, running the Rebel offense, going after every loose ball, and making big plays on defense, including the game-clinching steal. Her constant hustle combined with a playmaking ability to make her the most valuable part of the Rebels’ winning effort.
Most Well- Rounded- Sydney Lockard, Dixie- While a lot of players excel in particular areas, Lockard did it all for the Colonels. The junior guard was able to create her own shot while setting her teammates up for plenty of their own. She also played strong defense and was one of the game’s best rebounders, truly showing her worth in every possible aspect of the game.
Best Scorer- Kelsie Anderson, Boone- There was no area of the court that Anderson wasn’t a threat to score from Friday night. The junior wing knocked down a number of long-range shots, got penetration for mid and close-range buckets, and ran the court in transition for some nice lay-ins as well, totaling a game-high 28 points. Even in a high scoring game, her wide array of scoring abilities shown above the rest.
Knockdown Shooters- Celia Pelfrey, Dixie and Adriana Haynes, Boone County – It was impossible to choose between these two. Both were on fire all night, knocking down 6 three-pointers apiece in a great display of marksmanship. They also contributed in other ways, as Pelfrey scored well inside and from mid-range while Haynes came up with some big rebounds.
Best Passer- Sydney Lockard, Dixie- While she was already mentioned for her all-around play, Lockard deserves special attention for her passing ability. The junior guard sent the ball zipping around the offensive, somehow managing to consistently find its way into the hands of an open teammate. Dixie’s ability to create strong half-court offense can be credited largely to Lockard’s playmaking ability.
Sticky Hands- Ella Steczynski, Dixie- While Boone created more turnovers overall, Steczynski was the single best player at forcing her opponents to cough up the ball. The freshman guard clearly has a knack for getting in passing lanes, coming up with a number of steals to help her team counter some of the Rebels’ hustle and create transition opportunities of their own.
Interior Presence- Lara Reynolds, Dixie- In a game where perimeter play was the star, Reynolds was the best interior player for either team. The senior center scored well inside, came down with a number of rebounds, and did a good job protecting the rim, proving to be a difference-maker on the inside.
Best Penetration- Mackenzie Tackett, Boone- While long-range shots were the most effective form of offense, getting to the rim and drawing fouls still had its place in this game, and that’s where Tacket was at her best. The junior guard got inside and not only converted some nice shots, but also drew a number of fouls, getting herself and her team some valuable points with her physical play.
Hustle- Alissa Avila, Boone- While not the biggest or smoothest player on the court, Avila nevertheless provided great value to her team Friday night. The senior guard was tenacious on defense and went after every loose ball, coming up with several steals and an impressive number of rebounds for her size. She also showed some nice ball-handling skills.
X-Factor- Boone County’s Tenacity- There were points throughout the game where Dixie looked like the better team. The had more size and athleticism and a more organized offensive attack. Despite this, Boone simply refused to go away, battling at every turn and eventually wearing the Colonels down until they started making mistakes late. They drew a number of fouls and created plenty of turnovers, doing just enough to cause Dixie’s comeback to come up short.
