Both teams feature a host of talented young players so the future is bright for coaches John Albert at Vashon and Chris Forrest at Lutheran North. It was a very competitive game from start to finish, but it was Lutheran North who prevailed in the end with a 50-47 victory.
Here are the 10 Best from the Lutheran North-Vashon game:
Best Player: Raychel Jones (Vashon) – The 5’10” 2023 forward showed why she is one of the best freshmen in the state. She scored a game-high 20 points, grabbed a bunch of rebounds and also blocked four shots. She played all five positions on the floor from point guard to the low post. She was also on top of the Wolverines’ zone trap, where she used her length to casue problems.
Best Senior: Jaylia Smith (Vashon) – The 5’8″ point guard scored 15 points and displayed the ability to get buckets from all three levels. She is excellent in the pick and roll where she can pass to the forward rolling or she can get into the mid-range area to drain jumpers. She has excellent escape moves to create offense off the dribble.
Best Junior: Cynaa Coleman (Lutheran North) – The 5’10” guard had a big impact on the game despite scoring only two points. When she entered the game, the Crusaders were trailing 9-2 and she settled things down with her ball handling and passing. She is strong with the ball and she did a nice job dropping dimes.
Best Sophomore: Symone Thomas (Lutheran North) – The 6’0″ forward scored eight points and had a big presence in the lane with her scoring and rebounding. She was especially effective on the offensive boards where she did a good job of carving out position on the weak side. She also did a very good job of making her free throws.
Best Freshman: Raychel Jones (Vashon): See above. A special mention to Laila Blakeny of Lutheran North for scoring a game-high 17 points to lead the Crusaders.
Best Shooter: Laila Blakeny (Lutheran North): The 5’7″ guard scored a team-high 17 points and she lit it up from 3-point range by knocking down four triples.
Best Defender: Taliah Dilworth (Lutheran North) – A 5’10 guard who has good length and athleticism and she uses both to be an excellent on-ball defender. She is also good at getting into the passing lanes and being disruptive.
Best Post Player: Kanitra Barnett (Vashon) – The 5’10” 2023 forward has a good set of post moves where she uses her strength and good footwork in the lane. She has a solid up and under move. She is also good in the pick and roll with her ability to roll to the basket and catch the ball in traffic.
Best Passer: Cynaa Coleman (Lutheran North) – Not only is the 2020 guard a good ball handler, but her passing was on point for much of the evening. She had several one-handed outlet passes that were accurate and led to transition opportunities for her teammates.
Best Reserve: Laila Blakeny (Lutheran North) – The 2023 guard came in with instant offense off the bench with 17 points, which included four 3-pointers and some nice takes to the basket with the opposite hand in the lane.
