Continue ReadingWith our new 2020 rankings out, it’s time to look specifically at each position to determine which players are doing their particular jobs the best. Today we examine the state’s top wings. This particular group features some of the truly elite players in the state, maybe the most top-heavy of any position. It is something of a catch-all in terms of style, as wings are marked by their versatility and ability to play multiple roles, something these players exhibit quite well.
Maddie Scherr, Ryle- While Scherr’s game is trademarked in many respects by her versatility, she mostly plays what can best be described as a point forward. Scherr does it all for the Lady Raiders, leading the team in points, (15.8) rebounds, (7.8) and unofficially assists (5.8) as well as steals (2.9) and blocks (1.8) per game. There’s not much more that hasn’t been said about Scherr, who is finishing up one of the most decorated careers in the state’s recent history as a McDonald’s All-American and likely as Miss Basketball.
Erin Toller, Sacred Heart- The best player on the state’s best team, Toller has come all the way back from the knee injury that cost her her junior season. She also fits the do-it-all model of a top wing, scoring, rebounding, distributing, and defending at a high level. Aside from her stats and skills, Toller has helped instill the Valkyries with a tenacity and toughness that has made them the favorites to take home the state championship.
Shelby Calhoun, Christian Academy-Louisville- Of the top players in the state, Calhoun may be the most difficult to slot into a single position. She is an elite rebounder, averaging 12.8 per game by snatching seemingly any missed shot she wants, and scores most of her 16 points in the paint. On the other hand, she can also get out and run in transition, serving as one of her team’s top ball-handlers, and possess a nice mid-range shot. Calhoun can also guard any position on the court, making her one of the most versatile players in the state.
Kendall Wingler, Meade County- One of, if not the primary responsibilities of a wing is to score, Wingler has proven to be perhaps the best in the state at that task. Statistically, she is having far and away the best scoring season in the state, averaging 31.9 points per game, almost 6 ppg more than the next highest scorer. She is also knocking down 4.7 three-pointers per game, 1 better than the next best in the state. And she is doing this while shooting 50% from the field, 46.5% from deep, and 89.1% from the foul line (another best in the state), showing elite efficiency to go with the volume of her scoring.
Ellie Taylor, Elizabethtown- While not putting up quite the same statistics of other players on this list, Taylor exhibits the versatility expected of a wing as well as anyone in the state. Playing on a loaded team, she fills whatever role the Panthers require, stepping up as a scorer, defender, rebounder, and distributor at different points this season. While not as flashy as some of the other wings on this list, Taylor’s game nonetheless brings tremendous value.
