Despite the early season loss the young Carroll team came out and gave it everything they had in this one. Carroll got off to an early lead and startled Homestead’s offense. Carroll led 9-5 after one quarter. Homestead started to get some momentum in the second quarter as they knocked down several big threes. Both teams continued to struggle from the field as Homestead took a 19-13 lead into the half.
Homestead came out firing in the second half forcing turnovers and getting a big boost from their backcourt as they hit several shots from downtown. Despite Carrolls turnover issues they were able to keep the Homestead lead to 33-20 going into the fourth quarter. Ayanna Patterson started to get going on both ends for Homestead in the fourth and Carroll had no answer. Homestead went on to win 51-24.
Carroll Has Young Potential
Despite their struggles from the field Carroll showed promise. Freshman guard Saniya Jackson finished with 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks playing against a very mature and tough Homestead backcourt. Fellow freshman Taylor Fordyce and Nevaeh Jackson struggled from the field but showed promise on both ends of the floor. This groups development will be something to keep an eye on over the next few seasons.
Homestead Has to Improve From the Field
Homestead finished the game 18/51 for 35% shooting. This has to improve if Homestead wants to compete against Northwestern. It’s a possibility that the time of day might have had something to do with Homesteads struggles from the field. Regardless they will need a big shooting performance from their backcourt tonight to open up opportunities for their post players.
Homestead Can Fill It Up From Downtown
Few teams have the ability to hurt you in as many ways as Homestead can. They have the ability to go big or small to matchup with different scenarios. In this one they shot 8/23 from beyond the arch for 34% which is not bad for a team as whole to shoot. Freshman Molly Stock shot 3/7 from three and finished with 9 points. Senior guard Riley Parker was also 3/7 from three and went on to finish with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman Alison Stephens was 2/4 from three and finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds. If Homestead can knock down the three ball with a little higher percentage against Northwestern they will no doubt be in it late.
Toughness Won This One
As both teams struggled from the field the rebound total in this one continued to go up. Homestead owned the rebound stats grabbing 50 rebounds compared to Carroll’s 30. Homesteads 17 offensive rebounds led to a ton of points to help them close the deal as they struggled from the field. Despite being undersized Carroll refused to go away in this one and it’s rare to see so much toughness in a team as young as Carroll.
Ayanna Patterson and Sydney Graber Are the Key Against Northwestern
Patterson will more than likely have the task of guarding Northwestern post Kendall Bostic. I think this matchup along with a few other factors will have the biggest impact on tonights game. Homestead is gonna lean Heavy on senior wing Sydney Graber (Central Michigan Commit) to score from all three levels. Both these players have game changing potential and it should be a sight to see tonight.
