The North Carolina basketball state playoffs are fast approaching. I am anxious to see how a number of players perform this playoff season. Playoff time is a chance to put all of your prior month’s work to the test as a team and person. For each player, who are leaders and the stars of their team, this is your time. For those that are on the verge of taking their skills to the collegian level, this is your time to set your-self apart and prove why you are going to the next level! Now is the time to lead your team to victory against the best competition your state has to offer. In these moments, legends are made! You either carry your team to the crown or you go out swinging. Either way, you bring your best game and you lay it on the line for the title. Here are 6 players I’m looking forward to watching in the North Carolina state playoffs!
Timmons is a junior guard for North Mecklenburg High School in Huntersville, NC. Timmons has tremendous skills as it pertains to offensive moves. There really isn’t anyone in Charlotte that can stop her from scoring. Her jab step, jumper, sweep through, euro, I could go on, are all lethal. Timmons is the type of player that could carry her team deep into the playoffs. North Meck is in a tough conference and finished third so they may have some early road games against higher seeds. Timmons is the type of player that could lead her team to upsetting a few higher seeds. This is Timmons and North Mecks opportunity to play outside of the conference against unfamiliar teams and do some work in the state playoffs.
Nyla McGill
McGill is a junior guard from Providence High School in Charlotte NC. She has already committed to Yale and with that decision out the way, McGill can focus on winning a state title. McGill’s Providence team won their regular season conference title. Providence will have a strong high seed which should give them a few home games. I am looking forward to seeing how McGill will carry the load and lead her team. Providence has a good team and could make a run. McGill is the catalyst as she runs the show. She has this innate ability to drive herself and team to make plays when needed. She can get to the basket and has a pretty good jump shot. She has a great feel for the game which puts her in place to make plays. They are in position dominate some lower seeded teams early on and then move on to play the toughest competition in the state as they advance. However, they need to take it one game at a time. I’m looking forward to seeing McGill lead, make the plays I know she can and guide her talented teammates to a long run in the playoffs.
Braylyn Milton
Milton is a junior guard from Independence High School in Mint Hill, NC. Milton is the type of player that will keep coming after you. Example, she could be in the midst of a sub-par game but she will not quit fighting and will stay in attack mode. Milton can get to the basket, shoot the jumper and just puts tremendous pressure on the defense. A player like this can explode at any time and carry a team to victory. I’m excited to see how she performs in the playoffs, she is built to go on a tear.
Samya Suffren
Suffren is a freshmen guard from Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, NC. Suffren is on one of the best teams in not only Charlotte but the state of NC. She plays with very talented players and any one of them could by the key to their long-term success. However, I’m interested in seeing what Suffren can do as she takes her team deep into the state tourney. As the one handling the ball most of the game she is vital in making sure the game is at the right pace, getting her teammates involved and making plays. As a freshmen, it may seem that she could be overwhelmed with the circumstances of the moment but I think she will be fine!
Taylor Henderson
Henderson is a junior wing for Myers Park High School in Charlotte NC. Henderson is a game changer! She is a force who comes out of nowhere. Henderson can get to the basket as she is sneaky quick and fast. She can hit the mid-range shot and is a hand full for a defense. She works hard on defense and boards very well. I like her overall game. When she is coming down hill she is in control and can make a play at the rim. She isn’t the type of player you totally stop as she can do so many things. You just have to hope she doesn’t bring her “A” game but that doesn’t happen often. Henderson will play a major role in the success of Myers Park during this playoff run.
Moss is a sophomore guard from South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte NC. Moss is a tough one to rate. She isn’t the quickest, tallest or fastest but when it’s all said and done, she gets the job done. She can stuff a stat sheet like Lebron James! It’s incredible the production she generates. She is smart, knows how to score and understands dynamics of the game that can’t be taught. I enjoy watching her play because it’s a challenge to see exactly how she is dominating the game. As South Meck makes their playoff run, Moss will need to play a major role. I’m anxious to see if opponents can find a way to contain her. Moss is sneaky good and I believe that she can pose issues in the playoffs. My guess is that they will be on the road after a round or two playing a higher seed so she will need her “A” game but from what I’ve seen, she will find a way to be a major player.
