It gets even better, #7 South Grand Prairie plays #13 Cedar Hill so that’s 6 of the top 13 Texas teams battling for one spot out of Region 1 to play in the state semifinals. Texas is broken up into four regions and this has happened before, in fact, quite a few times and today this story broke.
Ironically there was a debate going on the Texas Hoops message board back in the day and I’m talking over 15 years ago when only 3 teams from each district made the playoffs. If you’re not familiar with message boards, picture Twitter except you could keep up everything being said on a topic and this topic was brought up by one of my friends, Mike Samuels, about seeding the teams in the playoffs, so again, nothing is new, this has been going and I’m glad the story dropped on his birthday. The bottom line is this is going to be a battle out of the region and it solidifies the Metroplex as still having the strongest squads in the state
Deja Kelly (Duncanville) wants to go out with a bang, so does Myra Gordon (LD Bell) and they are a couple of kids I said were #D1Locks in elementary school, I had to find a way to make it about me but peep this, Desoto has a college squad, with 7 or 8 D1 players, out however is one of the best in the country, Sa’Myah Smith. and this is the rubber game everyone envisioned, that means they split their first two. It gets even better, South Grand Prairie has beaten both, they split with Duncanville but this couldn’t have been scripted any better unless they were actually reseeded which would bring in several issues or would it?
I thought I’d have time to break down Region 4, I don’t but I do know Austin Westlake has a very tough squad led by seniors Shay Holle, Presley Benett, and Bailee Chynoweth and they are going against San Antonio Reagan featuring the #1 freshman in Texas, Samantha Wagner who at 6’3 can do just about anything she wants. I caught defending state champion Judson at the Texas Invitational, they were without Kierra Sandelin but they got after it and Amira Mabry brought some OMG stuff to Pasadena. They have to battle San Antonio O’Connor and that picture-perfect jumper from Carleigh Wenzel so action galore across the state tonight
