I got the chance to watch the Hebron Hawks play the Denton Guyer Wildcats Tuesday evening at Flower Mound High School in the 6A Region 1 bi-district round. The Wildcats controlled this game from start to finish, while the Hawks suffered from a poor shooting night from the field. Guyer ultimately took care of business, winning 61-36 and advancing to the second round of postseason play where they will take on Cedar Hill this Friday.
Here are seven intriguing prospects from this playoff matchup:
Jade Thompson – 2020 5’8 Guard/Forward (Texas Elite Prime) Denton Guyer HS – The Texas A&M Corpus Christi commit finished with a game-high 18 points. Thompson put together an impressive all-around performance vs. Hebron, showing that she can score in a variety of ways by knocking down a pair of catch and shoot threes while also utilizing her strength on the block and off the drive. She made some impact plays on defense as well.
Evie Goetz – 2021 6’1 Guard/Forward (HG Elite Watts) Denton Guyer HS – The junior has already verbally committed to TCU. Her combination of size and skill makes her a mismatch for just about anyone who dares to guard her. She can heat up in an instant, with eight of her 13 points coming in the first quarter. Goetz has a pure jumper from behind the arc, accounting for three triples in this contest. She can put it on the floor and use her long strides to get to the cup for easy buckets too. The No. 8 ranked prospect in our 2021 rankings has the potential to be a force at the next level.
Isabella Earle – 2021 5’10 Combo Guard Denton Guyer HS – Earle has some flair to her game. She is a smooth ball handler and displayed the ability to play on or off the ball on offense. Her court vision is excellent. The junior guard is a willing distributor who makes accurate passes. Additionally, Earle makes timely cuts to afford herself good looks from the interior. She finished with 15 points.
Katelyn Jones – 2023 5’6 Point Guard (Texas Lonestar 16 Black) Denton Guyer HS – I’m always impressed to see a freshman in the starting lineup. Jones showed why she was deserving of such a spot with her unselfish nature on offense. She is a crafty playmaker who keeps the ball moving. The underclassmen can accelerate to the basket and finish against taller opponents as well. She is also a tenacious defender who thrives in Guyer’s 2-3 zone scheme. Her future is bright.
Courtlyn Loudermill – 2020 5’8 Shooting Guard (Pro Skills 17U Nationals) Hebron HS – Loudermill is a scoring guard and led Hebron on a run in the third quarter that cut the deficit from 20 to 11. She is a fearless player on offense who can get it done with her jump shot or by attacking from the drive. I loved the way she got downhill and drew fouls when her team was struggling from the field.
Cammie McKinney – 2022 5’7 Point Guard (Drive Nation 16U EYBL) Hebron HS – The sophomore floor general is a smart decision maker who never forces things on offense. Her ability to create space for herself with her tight handles really jumped out at me. McKinney hit a nice-looking step-back three when her team desperate needed a jolt of life. In addition, she is one of the better off-ball defenders I’ve seen this season. I’m fascinated to see how she develops over the remainder of her high school career.
Camille Thomas – 2021 5’11 Power Forward Hebron HS – Thomas got into some early foul trouble that forced her to sit for the majority of the first half. Hebron was overwhelmed by Guyer’s size when she was not on the court. However, she made an immediate impact at both ends when she reentered the game in the third quarter. She possesses good length which makes her a solid rim protector on defense. Offensively, the junior big rolls hard to the rim and scores well in the paint.
