While Cooper had the talent to hang with Ryle, their youth caught up with them as they ended up with too many turnovers and gave up too many offensive rebounds to win. For their part, Ryle played strong defense and put forth a well-rounded effort to make up for some poor shooting and ultimately triumph. Here are the players who did the best in this game.
Whitney Lind Whitney Lind 6'1" | PF Cooper | 2023 State KY , Cooper- Despite the losing effort, Lind was the standout player in this game. The freshman forward was excellent on the offensive end, with her 25 points accounting for almost half of the Lady Jags’ total scoring. She did it all, scoring inside, from the mid-range, knocking down 3’s, and getting to the line. She also used her impressive length to rebound well and play good defense inside to round out a great individual game.
Brie Crittendon Brie Crittendon 5'9" | SG Ryle | 2021 State KY , Ryle- Putting together the most well-rounded performance of the game, Crittendon was all over the court for the Lady Raiders. The junior grabbed rebound after rebound, created numerous turnovers on the defensive end, made good passes, and scored some nice buckets inside and from mid-range for 15 total points. While she did not have the best shooting night, Crittendon showed her tenacity and found plenty of other ways to impact the game.
Abby Holtman Abby Holtman 5'11" | SF Ryle | 2023 State KY , Ryle- The Lady Raiders’ best scorer, Holtman created plenty of offense for a team that was not having its best shooting night. Rather than continuing to jack up long-range shots, the freshman guard instead got to the rim, scoring and drawing a number of fouls for a team-high 18 points. She also created a number of turnovers, several of which she turned into transition baskets.
Logan Palmer, Cooper- The other real offensive threat for Cooper, Palmer showcased a skillset similar to Lind’s. The 8th grader also showed an ability to score on all levels, ending up with 17 points despite not seeming to be as much of a focus of the offense as Lind was. She was also the Lady Jags’ best rebounder, coming up with a number of 2nd chances on the offensive glass, showing fight inside to go with her scoring skill.
Maddie Scherr Maddie Scherr 5'11" | CG Ryle | 2020 State KY , Ryle- While Scherr is generally the standout player in any game she’s in, she took more of a backseat Tuesday night than usual. That is not to say the senior guard played poorly, quite the opposite. She made plenty of impact plays on defense and still got buckets when her team needed them for 14 points. The McDonald’s All-American contributed to Ryle’s overall team effort rather than trying to unnecessarily take over the game, which is a sign of her leadership and confidence in her teammates.
Amber Chaney, Cooper- While the box score may show that Chaney did not score on Tuesday night, the eye test shows that she still had a major impact on the game. The sophomore guard ran the offense for Cooper, making numerous passes in both the half-court and transition to set up Lind and Palmer for buckets. She also did well bringing the ball up the court for the Lady Jags, showing her strong ball-handling and drawing several fouls as a result.
Jaiden Douthit, Ryle- While I’ve mentioned several times that Ryle shot poorly in this game, Douthit proved to be the exception. The senior guard knocked down both of her 3 point attempts, the second of which came as Cooper was trying to make a run, as well as a nice mid-range floater. She also rebounded well and played strong defense, which was par for the course for Ryle on Tuesday.
