Early on, it was a very slow game in terms of scoring. Both teams were playing really tough defense. Xavier Prep looked like they were heavily denying any 3 point attempts while Westwood almost dared Xavier Prep to knock down 3’s.
Xavier really struggled to shoot the ball from deep. However, I think the thing that really hurt them was all of the forced and unforced turnovers plus rebounding. Despite having a significant size advantage, Xavier Prep struggled on the boards. Westwood really crashed the glass hard as a team and came up with multiple second chance opportunities.
Xavier Prep had a huge 4th quarter that significantly cut the Westwood lead. However, it seemed to just be a little too late. I thought Elysia Fleetwood really made a difference for XCP. She had to go out of the game early in the first due to foul trouble and they seemed like a completely different team without her leadership. She brings another level of toughness to their team.
I was also really impressed with Sienna Cherwinski. She has a certain poise around her that wouldn’t be uncommon for a senior guard. However, Cherwinski is a freshman. She plays with a lot of confidence and never looks too rattled for any situation. Really impressed with her game and I am really excited to see how much she develops over the summer.
Overall, it was a very good game for Westwood all around. All of their girls came to play and all contributed. Westwood moves on and now faces the #2 seed, Pinnacle.
