Continue ReadingAs the Blue Ridge District season has come to an end, there were great games to end the season and battle for seedings going into the district tournament. There was a battle at Lord Botetourt against William Fleming whom both had a successful season, with Botetourt (9-0) in the district and Fleming (8-2) in the district, both of Flemings losses coming from Botetourt. It was an early battle with Fleming going into the half leading by 2, but Botetourts 20-9 run in the fourth gave Botetourt the win 64-55.

Veldman is a 5’11” Senior who has dominated the basketball court for years. She led all players with 33 points, shooting 13-15 from the free-throw line, 16 rebounds and 6 assists. She is a standout player who knows the game very well. She is very athletic in which she can score at will in the inside and her jumping ability gets her easy rebounds. She is in the 1,000 clubs for points and rebounds throughout her basketball career.
Robertson is a 6’0″ Senior who used her size and length on the defensive end to give Fleming struggles on the inside. She had 5 blocks to go along with her 9 points and 6 rebounds. Veldman and Robertson has played alongside each other for years putting Botetourt in position to win many games and some state titles.
Shakura Anderson drives hard to the basket. Photo Credit: Roanoke TimesJunior Shakura Anderson from William Fleming did what she could to give the Colonels a chance, scoring 15 points in the game. Shakura can play the guard or the forward, her ability to handle the ball and shoot puts pressure on the defense to close out, giving her the opportunity to put the ball on the floor and drive past you. Shakura is also able to play down low and grab many rebounds with her size and athleticism. Senior Jermiya Ollie, a 5’7” forward had 12 points coming off the bench. She is a shooter with basketball IQ who brings leadership to her team.
