Continue ReadingIt was a fantastic title game in Reston last night between the South Lakes Seahawks (20-4, 11-0 district) and the McLean Highlanders (16-9, 6-5 district). Lots of great plays, teamwork, resilience, and mental toughness was on display. All the things you’d normally see in a championship game. Each team will go on to compete in regionals so fortunately for us, we haven’t seen the last of these two great teams. But which players stood out last night?
Nina Boffman Nina Boffman 5'7" | CG South Lakes | 2020 State VA (G, 2020)
Boffman had the clutch gene tonight, hitting a three with just over a minute left to tie the game at 61. She went 3-5 from three and finished with 18 points, 2 assists and 1 rebound. Her infectious energy helped the Seahawks stay alive when McLean took the lead late in the game. Her ability to heat up from beyond the arc will be crucial as the Seahawks move forward in regionals.
[player_tooltip player_id="100559" first="Nina" last="Boffman"]Nicole Forbes (G, 2021)
Forbes earned the start last night, and rightfully so. She has developed over the course of this season, going from a sixth man to one of the Seahawks’ best defenders. She is turning into one of those players with a great court awareness, who knows how to be in the right place at the right time. She finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and one assist.
Elly Glenn (G, 2020)
Elly GlennThe other senior starter aside from Elizabeth Dufrane Elizabeth Dufrane 5'8" | SF McLean | 2020 State VA , Glenn may be the heartbeat of this team. She played last night with a chip on her shoulder, and was fiesty, making plays that shifted the momentum in her team’s favor. She finished with 10 points and two rebounds.
Kendall Jones (F, 2021)
Kendall JonesJones is emerging as one of McLean’s best players and essential to them in the post, but don’t count her out as a passer too. She scored their first six points last night (a few of which were putbacks) and continues to be an important presence for them and will be so ever more as they move forward into regionals. Last night she flirted with a double-double and finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Mia Fitzgerald (G/F 2022)
Fitzgerald’s performance last night was very telling of how good she is going to be in the next few years. She handled the ball well and made a lot of good decisions to get herself and teammates good looks to the tune of 8 assists. Her length and athleticism also allowed her to be one of the best defenders on the floor (make sense, since she earned all-district defensive team honors). She contributed 12 points and 6 rebounds last night.
Both teams advance to regionals next week, with their opponent and date TBD.
