Carmel took on defending champion St. Paul’s School For Girls for the IAAM Conference championship and they were not quite up to the task as they dug themselves a 26-14 halftime deficit with 16 first half turnovers and 14 personal fouls. St. Paul’s had 10 first half turnovers of their own, but they made more shots and played with more discipline which allowed them to carry a lead.
Both teams played a much better second half but Mt. Carmel staged a furious comeback after trailing by as much as 17 points. They went on a 37-19 run which was ignited by freshman Jayla Mayles who nailed a three pointer. In the end Destiny Myles was too much as she scored a game high 25 points, including several clutch baskets and free throws down the stretch.
Destiny Ryles, Senior, St. Paul’s
Destiny was her usual electrifying self on her way to scoring a game high 25 points. She repeatedly got into the lane and caused problems for the defense. If she wasn’t scoring in bunches she was finding open teammates for easy looks. College coaches that need a strong lead guard should be checking for her.
Alex Sawyers, Senior, St. Paul’s
Alex is the perfect compliment to Ryles. The only thing better than having a lead guard that can score and set up teammates is having two of them. Alex scored an efficient 9 points and ran the offense when needed. She’s a very smart player that has gotten better every year.
Madison Beale, Sophomore, St. Paul’s
Madison was very active and assertive in this game. She played mostly on the wing and came up with 8 points. She’s fast and strong and not afraid to mix it up in the paint.
Esprit Cha, Junior, St. Paul’s
Ms. Cha was big in this game with 14 points. She hit a couple of three pointers which helped stretch the floor and give her teammates driving lanes. She was disruptive on defense and got herself into position to score by moving without the ball. Her performance was probably the difference in the game.
Anylah Davis, Freshman, Mt. Carmel
Anylah is a scrappy point guard that never takes a step back. She had some early jitters that led to turnovers but she settled in and played solid defense as the game went on. I like her potential as a floor general. She’s fast and gets into the lane
Hawa Dombouya, Freshman, Mt. Carmel
Hawa’s minutes were limited in the first half for some reason. Coach Rob Long turned her loose in the final quarter and she was dominant. At 6’4″ St. Paul’s had no match for her size. She scored 11 points in the final minutes of the game and dominated on the boards. Mt. Carmel came up just short of a stunning rally thanks to her play. This kid is going to have a big summer.
Jayda Mayles, Freshman, Mt. Carmel
Jayda also had limited minutes but she was good for two long three pointers while she was in the game. She shot the ball with confidence and got in on a couple of rebounds.
Tam Stanford, Junior, Mt. Carmel
I spent most of the game waiting for Tam to show up. When she got going she really took off and scored in bunches. She got to the rim and knocked down some three pointers that fueled a furious rally that came up just short. Tam is an explosive two guard that can play some point too. She will definitely be a nice addition to a college program.
