The Vikings went 3-0 last week to improve to 17-0 on the season. This group has shown it’s capable of winning close games all year and while they might not have quite as strong a resume as a couple of the other elite teams, Kindred has the high-end talent, experience, style of play and cache to be considered the favorite to win another state title. Abby Duchsherer is arguably the best player in the state but she’s not the only top-tier piece in this outfit. Terryn Johnson and Kristina Freier are elite players as well. Kindred is big, athletic, skilled and deep.
Langdon/Edmore/Munich
LEM stayed undefeated after another fantastic week, beating No. 4 Grafton/St. Thomas and No. 6 Four Winds/Minnewaukan before wrapping the week and season up with a win over Velva. The Cardinals have been dominant all season and will be the favorite to emerge from a very good Region 4. With Callie Ronningen, Kaitlynn Scherr and Morgan Freije leading the way, this group has to be considered right there with Kindred as a favorite to win the state title.
Trenton
The Tigers have toughed out some wins in recent weeks, showing they are more than capable of winning games in ways other than blowouts. They’ve got the experience from last year’s run to the state tournament and while their regular season schedule hasn’t been nearly as challenging as some of the other top teams around the state, there’s little doubt that they are good enough on both ends of the floor to win multiple games in a state tournament setting.
Grafton/St. Thomas
The Spoilers saw their 13-game winning streak snapped at the hands of No. 2 LEM but remain on track to earn the top seed in Region 2. It’s always been about the postseason for this group, as they have been good enough to get over the hump for a few years without finishing the job.
Carrington
The Cardinals have won 10 games in a row and appear to be peaking at the right time, as they’ve beaten a number of solid teams including Rugby, Oakes and LaMoure/Litchville-Marion. They are 16-2 on the season and will take on Thompson in their regular season finale. Carrington should be considered the favorite to emerge from a very good Region 3. Kiera Eli has been outstanding providing consistent scoring on the wing and they’ve got excellent balance throughout the lineup.
Four Winds/Minnewaukan
The Indians went 1-1 last week to move to 15-3 on the season and will wrap up the regular season on Monday against Dunseith. They lost to No. 2 LEM and beat No. 7 Rugby last week and will go into the postseason as prepared as any team in the state. Latasha Bellile is a go-to player for this group but they are balanced with solid players including Riah Littleghost and Ezura Rainbow providing solid production inside.
Rugby
The Panthers took a loss to Four Winds/Minnewaukan last week, finishing the regular season at 17-2. Despite turning over a huge chunk of the roster, Rugby has been one of the elite teams all season, winning with terrific defense and strong play from Sarah Blessume and Mykell Heidlebaugh. Offense can hold this team back at times, but the Panthers have proven they can grind out wins.
Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood
The Mavericks have one of the state’s best defenses and while the offense has come and gone at times, Leah Feland has been a steady presence at point guard and young pieces like Allison Undlin, Kylie Abernathy and Madison Moberg are showing a ton of progress as the year has gone on. MLS finished the regular season 18-1 and will head into region play as the top seed in District 12.
Thompson
The Tommies have taken losses to the best teams they’ve played in recent weeks, losing to Grafton/St. Thomas and Kindred. The defense will be the formula for this team come the postseason. A matchup against Carringtonthis week serves as a nice tuneup ahead of Region 2 play and once there, despite anything that happened in the regular season, this team is too good to discount. McKenzie Hughes, Macy Jordheim and Kya Sorby have been terrific on both ends of the floor.
Kidder County
The Wolves lost by 18 points to LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Monday, falling to 15-2 on the season. Kidder County rebounded with blowout wins over Wilton/Wing and Enderlin to finish the season 17-2. The Wolves play elite defense and will be there at the end in Region 3 with Madelyn Schmidt is one of the best players in the state.
