Seniors Maliyah Johnson (Texas A&M) and Mailyn Wilkerson (Trinity Valley) provide much of the offensive firepower yet the addition of fellow senior Hillary Broussard has definitely added, especially when you have one of the states top juniors Adaora Nwokeji applying heat on both ends. They open with Deer Park and appear to be on a collision course to meet Clear Falls to see who goes to regionals. Humble might have a say in that after they upset Atascocita on the road last week. The pressure they brought had me coming out of my jacket, I can’t make this stuff up because one thing I love is players that understand how to trap as well as play the passing lanes and trust me, if you can do that, great things will happen. It also helps that they have one of the top freshmen in the country, Kameryn Phillips, another one of those players that at 10 I called a #D1Lock. I love saying that over because it upsets the “haters” and if I can upset you for free on something as meaningless as that, I’m game. Speaking of upsets, Humble goes against District 21 champion Beaumont United and they could actually pull this off
Atascocita was one of my must-see teams way back when I labeled them “The Taz” with former A&M great Curtyce Knox and Lauren Price but that team was fun to watch. So is the new version led by Elyssa Coleman (Texas) and Dede Davis, one of the states top unsigned guards that can go off at any given time. They open up against Beaumont Westbrook and could be on a collision course to play Clear Springs to get to the regional semis. That could be an interesting game for a number of reasons but Kenna Gibson and Kylie Minter are a couple of rising up the chart sophomores and Jermia Green is an explosive “off the charts” junior, have I mentioned I called her a #D1Lock in MS? I’m sure I have but I did the same with Dobie’s Victoria Rivera (2022) and Janae Tucker (2023) but I probably said it before they even played in their first MS game. They open up against North Shore and freshman Shalayne Gould has brought so much energy that she’s flirting with double-doubles. The loss of junior Ja’Nyla Kennedy for the season definitely hurt but they still have Chrishelle Washington, who just brings “it” right at you as well as seniors Donalyn Johnson and Makayla Patterson so this could be an interesting opening round
