Continue ReadingThe vibe of the playoffs was in Marshall’s gymnasium last night during a matchup of the top teams in the National District. Several D1 commits dazzled throughout the game between the Statesmen and Eagles, but in the end a second half run of defensive intensity and three-point shooting sealed the win and number one seed in the district tournament for Edison. Amongst the display of talent were a few players doing the little, but important things and quietly demonstrating skills of their own.
Celeste Castma Celeste Castma 6'1" | PF Edison | 2021 State VA (F, 2021)
Castma did a little bit of everything for the Eagles, putting up 15 points, 6 boards and even a few steals. She is becoming more comfortable in the paint and will become an important factor in postseason play if Edison is to repeat as district and regional champs.
Valerie Dirkse (F, 2021)
Against Edison’s tough zone defense, Dirkse made a lot of smart decisions and fakes to get Marshall some easy buckets, totaling 8 points and 2 rebounds. She is finishing her junior season quite nicely and will most likely continue to improve going into her last year for the Statesmen.
Rachel South (F, 2020)
South was on the receiving end of a few smart decisions from Dirkse, and held it down in the post alongside her for the Statesmen to the tune of 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Her play will be crucial in what could possibly be the next meeting between these two talented squads in the district championship game.
Kaitlyn Lee Kaitlyn Lee 5'6" | SG Edison | 2020 State VA (F, 2020)
Lee contributed 3 points, 2 rebounds and one assist to the win. She has proven the ability to make an impact even when she’s not putting up bigger numbers, and did so last night. Being able to contribute wherever needed for a team holding several talented scorers who can go off any particular night is a great skill to have, and Lee clearly knows where she can be effective.
