Sacred Heart defeated Manual, 67-56.
Sacred Heart captures their 9th LIT Championship and their 13th straight victory. They improve to 21-1 this season.
Manual was on an 8 game winning streak coming into this one. They drop to 18-5 this season but they are only getting better. Big things coming for the Lady Crimsons
Five Takeaways
Erin Toller (Sacred Heart)
The UK signee with another impressive performance. She finished with a game-high 26 points, including 3 threes. She shot 55.5% from the field and 37.5% from deep. The senior guard has been great all season for the #1 team in KY. Although it is probably hard to snatch Miss Kentucky Basketball from the wide-margin favorite, Maddie Scherr, Toller still should be mentioned right up there with the Oregon signee. She is one of many reasons the Valkyries improve to 21-1 for the season. Toller makes the All-Tournament Team.
Kennedy Lee (Manual)
The sophomore forward is everything you want in the post. She was everywhere today and earned the Defensive Player of the Tournament Award. In Manual’s loss to SHA, Lee managed to put up 20 points and 15 rebounds. She even stepped out and drained Manual’s only three pointer of the game. With a player that is known to playing bully ball down-low, it was nice to see her step out and hit a shot like that. That will raise some eyebrows in the future. Bright bright future for Manual sophomore superstar and for the rest of the young core. Manual playing some of the best ball as of late and losing this game could bring out the best that has yet to come.
Destinee Marshall (Sacred Heart)
The Radford signee played an excellent game and she even earned the Offensive Player of the LIT Award. She finished the game with 14 points and 5 assists. She nailed 2 threes but a majority of her points came from inside the paint. She drove to the basket at will and had some fancy layups over out-stretched defenders. The senior point guard is exactly what gets this team going. She can score, control the pace, find open teammates, and plays excellent defense. She’s the motor for this special Sacred Heart team. She makes this team go. She loves to push the ball and she is even smart with it too. For being the primary ball handler and floor general, she only had one turnover in her 30 minutes of playing time. That is exactly what you want in a point guard.
JaKayla Thompson (Manual)
The freshman guard is quick and athletic. She has great poise for a freshman to be leading this Manual team. She drove to the basket with her dominant left hand and finished off the glass every time. She was a big reason Manual cut the 19 point lead down to 8 points in the 4th quarter but it was a little too late for the Lady Crimsons. She finished with 10 points. Manual drops to 18-5 but before this loss, they were on a 8-game winning streak. A lot of that is from a great coaching staff and the production from freshmen JaKayla Thompson and Sydne Tolbert, sophomores Kennedy Lee and Daisha White, and senior Jeanay Riley. An exciting young core you will want to keep an eye on.
13 Straight for Sacred Heart
Can anyone stop Sacred Heart? They improve to 21-1 and have been on top of the AP Poll for awhile now. They have won 13 straight and have been dominating while doing it. They have a really tough senior core of players, which include; UK signee Erin Toller, Radford signee Destinee Marshall, and Belmont volleyball signee Kristen Clemons. They also have a fun to watch freshman in Triniti Ralston. She’s fast and a killer on defense. They have other really solid players that come off the bench and do their jobs, whether it be on offense or defense. This team is deep, experienced, talented, and coached the right way. Coach Donna Moir and staff have done an excellent job with this team all year. From what I have seen from this team as of recently, I believe they are my pick to be the 2020 State Champions.
