Tuesday would be the rematch of two prestigious programs full of talent and even better coaching. Miege would take the first battle at home back on January 29th. Aquinas would be a bit short-handed with two of their key players Madison Skelton and Sydney Watts out with sickness and injuries.
1st quarter would belong to the Stags as they’d start the period red hot from the floor, pushing the tempo and finding open shooters like Gabi Henderson-Artis who’d knock down three 3 pointers in the quarter. Payton Verhulst would take over late in the period getting to the line for the and one and knocking down a shot from mid-range. Aquinas would use their size advantage early by getting it down low Beatrice Culliton for a couple of easy buckets but Miege was able to make some adjustments and end the period on a run to get out in front 23-10.
2nd-period Meige would keep the pressure on causing some early turnovers that they were able to turn into points by Ashton Verhulst and Payton Verhulst on the other end. Sameera Elmasri would get on the board with a drive and finish as well Molley Harnett connecting from long range. Aquinas would look to slow the pace of Miege down late in the period by running their offense continuously until they were able to break down the defense and get an easy basket which they were able to do on a baseline drive from Hartnett. Quarter would end with the score of 32-19 Miege.
3rd period would start quickly as Payton Verhulst was able to cut backdoor and finish for the hoop and the harm. Both teams would settle in defensively which made it tougher work even harder to score. Payton would stay aggressive throughout, getting to her spots to knock down countless pull-up jump-shots. Sameera Elmasri for Aquinas showed excellent poise throughout the game and was able to find cutters for baskets or to get to the line. Gabi Henderson-Artis would drop another 3 in the period to help stretch the Miege lead to 17 before it’s end. 3rd quarter score 46-29 Miege.
Stags would open the period with a few great defensive possessions, forcing turnovers and blocking shots. Ashton Verhuslt would turn those turnovers in the points on the other end, hitting from mid-range then from long. Elmasri would connect a pair at the line as well as a pull-up jumper late for the Saints. Hartnett would also finish through traffic and freshman Mia Sandvig would hit a 3 late to try and shrink the deficit. Final Score Miege 63, Aquinas 44.
