This was a battle for first place atop the Greater Kansas City Suburban White Division between the Lady Hornets of North Kansas City, winners of three in a row and the Lady Northmen of Oak Park, winners of three in a row as well.
The game was a showcase for two of the KC Metro areas’ best scorers. Ja’Mya Powell-smith for NKC and Paige Allen for Oak Park. Both of these dynamic players cam into the game averaging over 20 points per game and being solid leaders for their teams.
At the start of the game, you could see that this would be a defensive battle. Both teams had some sloppy play caused by solid defense. As the quarter ended and the second quarter began, both teams started to execute better and make some shots. The Lady Northmen held a slim 16 – 10 lead at half time.
The second half saw more scoring from both teams but the same defensive intensity as the first quarter. The lady Hornets put together some stops and scores and got things all tied up at 20 apiece. But the Lady Northmen would have an answer of their own late in the third as they held a slim 4 point lead going into the fourth quarter.
Late in the fourth, the Lady Hornets would cut the lead down to a one-point deficit after 2 made free throws. But that would be as close as they would get. The Lady Northmen execute late and make their free throws to secure the tough home win and earn a tie with the lady Hornets atop the GKCSC White Division. Final score Oak Park 45 – North Kansas City 43.
