In a battle of two Sunflower teams, the #1 team in the conference Olathe West Lady Owls battled the Olathe South Falcons on Senior night at South. This match-up should be a good one with two really good defensive teams that can also get it going on the offensive end with playmakers like Mackenzie Hart for Olathe West and Dani Winslow for Olathe South.
1st quarter would open up fast passed for both teams as they would get out in transition for their first buckets of the game. South would have balanced scoring with Dani Winslow, Sophie Reed, Mandy Truitt & Tyonne Duncan getting on the board. West’s floor general Kenzie Hart would lead the charge by either scoring or dishing to Bailey Collar and Michelle Anderson. As both teams settled in South’s slow pace would be enough to take 15-11 lead after one.
2nd quarter both teams would get back to what makes them both great and that’s defense. South would force Olathe West into turnovers or long-range shots that did connect. Olathe South would be forced to take perimeter shots in the quarter as well but was given extra opportunities from West’s lack of boxing out. Duncan for South would make her presence known with her relentless pursuit on the offensive glass. Avery Halliday would get on the board for South to give them a 21-17 lead with 2 minutes left in the period. Hart would connect on a pull-up jump shot late to get within two before the half.
3rd would start out with two back to back buckets for Winslow. West would counter with a corner 3 by Maddy Mcgavran. South would continue to have success on the offensive glass as Winslow would find one for a put back with 4 mins left in the quarter. Duncan would continue to carve space in the interior for easy 2’s down low. Both teams would trade 3’s by Ude for West and Sophie Reed for South before South would go on a 5-0 run with 1 minute remaining tp put them up 40-37 at the end of the 3rd.
The start of the 4th is sparked by Anaiya Ude with 4 quick points for West, followed by a 3 for Alyssa Moore. South would connect a couple of trips to the free-throw line to keep their lead at two. South would buckle down defensively to put together a string of stops before a timeout was called with 3:15 left and score at 42-44. Out of the timeout Coach, Rhoades would draw up a play designed for Anderson to slip on a screen and pass by Hart would be successful for the two. Owls would get a stop and then get fouled to shoot the one and one. Collar would miss the front end of the one and one, giving South an opportunity to go ahead. With 9.1 seconds left South would call a time out to set up something for a last shot on the side. Truitt for South would get fouled down low with 6 seconds on the clock, where she missed both free throws. West would rebound the miss and call a quick timeout. Hart would inbound the ball with 5.5 on the clock and the length of the court to go for the win, she’d pass it in, receive it back and push. As the clock clicks to 4, 3, 2, she pulls up for three and the game. As silence fills the gym and the buzzer sounds you’re left hearing nothing but screams from West fans and grown’s from South’s. Kenzie Hart with a walk-off 3 to win it 47-44 for Olathe West Lady Owls.
