Monday, February 24th, 2020 would lead us to an interesting match-up of Class 4A powerhouse and #2 ranked Piper High School vs 5A contender Schlagle High School. Both teams with similar styles yet Piper tends to be a bit deeper in terms of bench production and contributions.
The first quarter would start quickly for Piper, as Grace Banes would knock down a two 3’s within the first couple minutes and an another later in the quarter. Schlagle would struggle against Piper’s full-court pressure early which caused limited quality looks from the floor. To slow the pace of Piper, Schlagle would counter by sitting in a 2-3 zone defense, which allowed Camille Evans to jump a pass and get Schlagle’s first 2 of the game nearly halfway through the period. Schlagle would finally get their offense going as Ishante Suttington would nail a deep 3 and Tylieea would from connect from inside. Piper would balance scoring out for Piper as Ayreona Carter and Evelyn Vazquez would both connect on mid-range jumpers and trips to the line. 15-15 after one.
2nd period would open up by Ali Vigil nailing a 3 off of the unforced turnover by Alexis Hinson of Schlagle. The rest of the period would be a defensive battle as both teams would force turnovers throughout. Camille Evans would get things going late, finishing with 6 in the quarter. Piper struggled offensively the entire period but was able to get a rebound and put-back to finish the quarter on a high note and to bring the Lady Pirates within one, 22-23.
A well-rested Evelyn Vazquez would open the third period with a 3 from the wing and a breakaway layup off of a steal after she sat most of the 2nd due to foul trouble. Schlagle would quickly call a time out to regroup from a 5-0 run of Piper. Schlagle’s Tylieea Wallace would continue to dominate the offensive glass giving them extra shot opportunities while trying to stay close. Piper continued their high offensive production lead by Vazquez who put in 10 points in the quarter. Carter, Banes, Vigil, and Porter would all chip in as Piper would win the period 20-6 and take a commanding league of 42-29.
Piper would push their lead to 20 with early baskets from Carter and Vazquez, which allowed reserves to play most of the 4th. Schlagle would continue to try and chip away at the lead but would have to do it against a 1-2-2 zone for the quarter. Piper would get some bench scoring int he 4th from Jennifer Guilbeaux and Dawnyale Bruce to maintain a comfortable lead throughout. Game final Piper 63, Schlagle 46.
