Wednesday evenings match between two competitive teams that try to build on their win total before heading into Sub-State turned out to be a good one. Schlagle, the coming came into the game with a 15-4 record hoping to get a road victory against a tough Olathe Northwest team.
1st quarter both teams would struggle to find the basket in the the openings minutes before Schlagle’s Tylieea Wallace would connect on a drop step spin move, off of an offensive rebound for the games first two points. Stallions opened up in a 2-3 zone which made Northwest settle for perimeter shots that did’t fall early. Schlagle would eventually get out in transition, for a coupe layups and baskets by guard Ishante Suttington. ONW would finally get on the board with a 3 pointer by Liz Thomas with 2:44 left in the period. Fouls would help the Ravens get back in the game. Thomas and Riley Wade connecting were able to connect in their trips to the line late. Northwest would lead 11-10 after one.
2nd quarter started with Liz Thomas connecting from long distance, followed by another long range bomb from Mary Reiber off some great ball movement from the Ravens. Schlagle’s, Wallace would stay active on the glass earning another rebound followed by a put back. Thomas would connect from behind the arc two more times in the period, while the Stallions trio of Wallace, Evans and Suttington would all put baskets on the board to end the half trailing by one, 23-22.
3rd period would start with a short handed Schlagle team determined to make Northwest make outside shots. Wallace, the post for Schlagle continued to alter shots and clog the interior making it hard for any entry. Both teams would trade baskets throughout the 3rd. Evans would wake up and string together 7 quick points for the Stallions. M. Reiber, Thomas and Wade would the bulk of the scoring for the Ravens who trail by two with 2:53 left. Evans was able to orchestrate two great possessions by finding open cutters for layups. Mary Reiber would counter from distance late in the period to end the quarter down by one 35-36.
The 4th both teams would increase the defensive intensity making every bucket be earned. M. Reiber would both score and assist to open the quarter, while Suttington would drive and finish for the hoop and the harm. After both teams put together a string of stops, the drought would end on a great pass from Suttington to Wallace in close for two. Stallions would lead 42-39 with 3:50 remaining. Ravens would go ice cold in the period failing to convert from multiple trips to the line and from the field. Suttington would foul out with minutes left in the game which put the bulk of the ball handling on the back of the senior guard Evans for the Stallions. As ONW trail late they increase pressure creating a coupe turnovers for easy baskets to cut the deficient to 4, before sending Wallace to the line where she’d spit the two. A quick score by Wade would cut it to 3 with 15 seconds remaining. Wallace would miss the front end of a one in one which left Thomas with a chance to tie coming up short from the left wing. Schlagle win 49 – 46.
