The semi-finals of the GMC Tournament will take place on Thursday night at New Brunswick High School. It will begin with No. 2 Middlesex taking on No. 3 Monroe at 5:30 PM. Top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas will be in action at 7:00 PM against fifth-seeded South River. They were able to knock out No. 4 Piscataway in the quarterfinals. Here is what to expect when these four teams take the floor on Tuesday night.
Elite Star Power
This section begins with Emma Boslet. The leader of St. Thomas Aquinas recently became the program’s all-time leading scorer, boys and girls. She is one of the top players in the state. Boslet is scoring over 16 points per game and has six double-doubles on the season. She will be up against Ashley Fischer of South River. Fischer has dominated with 15.5 points and 13.6 rebounds per game. She is also blocking over three shots per game on the defensive end.
Middlesex is unbeaten on the season thanks to their strong duo of juniors. Kristen Yonker and Brianna Montajes have been incredible this season. Sophomores Madison Robel and Kaylin Nepton have also contributed to their success. This is a team that is set up well for next season. Monroe’s Madison Carey will look to help hand Middlesex their first loss. Carey is scoring 15.8 points per game in her senior season. There will be no shortage of stars on the floor Tuesday.
Teams looking to dethrone the champs
There are three games left in the GMC Tournament. St. Thomas Aquinas is the top-seed for the second straight year and they will look to repeat as champions. In 2019, St. Thomas Aquinas, then Bishop Ahr, won the GMC Tournament after going undefeated in conference play. They picked up a 47-32 victory over Edison. This year, they will have hungry teams and stars after them to take the title away. The Trojans will be the favorites once again but there are three talented teams that can pull off a major upset.
Scoring
This is not a knock on any team’s defensive ability, but there will be scoring in the semi-final round. All four teams scored 50 or more points in the quarterfinals led by St. Thomas Aquinas who put up 66 on East Brunswick. Each team has multiple players averaging over 10 points per game. They all also have one player over 15 points per game. All four teams like to put the ball in the basket and do not play at a slow pace. There will be fireworks on Tuesday night when the GMC Tournament semi-finals tip off.
