Millennium’s Alexandra Zelaya breaks school record
Millennium High School is having another dominant season and is largely expected to return to the 5A State Championship game. Their success is because of a number of players, but senior Alexandra Zelaya has been a key factor to Millennium’s victories.
Zelaya is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 18.6 points per game so far in the 21 games Millennium has played in. But recently, she set a scoring record for the team with the most points scored in a single season. In the team’s final game of the regular season against Independence, she put up 20 points to set the new record with 485 points.

“To reach such an amazing accomplishment has meant so much to me because it’s my way of leaving a mark on Millennium as my time here comes to an end. Seeing the long hours of training and practicing pay off has only encouraged me to keep my focus and drive going,” Zelaya said.
Zelaya, who is committed to the University of North Carolina, said the main factor for her from this year to last year has been the fact that the recruiting process is already over. She said the stress and pressure of having to decide where she will spend the next four years of her life is over, allowing her to put all her focus into preparing for the future.
“Forcing myself to get better in every aspect of the game, especially finishing all around the floor offensively, inside and out. Not to mention hitting the weight room with my trainer Morgan from SVS Physical Therapy with the focus of getting stronger as the competition next year will be heightened greatly,” Zelaya said.
And Zelaya is far from finished with that number, as the Tigers have the playoffs ahead of them for her to continue racking up the points for the single season record.
“As a team filled with so many seniors, we all want to have our last high school season end with a ring on our finger. After breaking the record, it just shows me that determination and focus will be key in our success this post season,” Zelaya said. “I definitely won’t settle for anything less than a state championship.”
