Coming into the game, no. 8 Dobson had a bye, while no. 9 Mountain Pointe defeated Cesar Chavez 46-29 in the play-in round last week to advance to bracket play.
The first quarter started out rough for Dobson as the shots just weren’t falling and the Mustangs were having trouble rebounding. Mountain Pointe, however, came out hot from the start, doing a great job of moving the ball around and getting their girls open for the shots. At the end of the first, they had jumped out to a 12-4 lead.
Dobson started out the 2nd quarter with a little more momentum behind them, but got themselves in trouble about midway through with fouls. Offensively, Dobson stepped things up, but Mountain Pointe was still the more physical team, which resulted in the Pride outplaying Dobson both offensively and defensive. Going into the half, Mountain Pointe held a 27-16 lead.
In the second half, Dobson came out more aggressively, but sloppy play offensively early on hurt them. Dobson had a couple more turnovers early on in the quarter, but finally were able to start forcing turnovers and getting steals with about 3:00 left. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to slow down Mountain Pointe, who still was able to outscore Dobson. At the end of three, it was 39-26.
Despite being down by 14, there was no quit in Dobson, who continued to battle the entire fourth quarter. Mountain Pointe attempted to run out the clock, but Dobson was not going down without a fight. Unfortunately for them, the fight was not enough, as Mountain Pointe was able to close out the game.
The top players for Mountain Pointe in the game were sophomore Danay Williams-Pope and juniors Faith Diggs, Gabrielle Okojie and A’laysha Clark. Clark was money in the paint for the Pride, putting up 15 on the night, while Diggs had eleven and Okojie had nine.
Mountain Pointe will advance on to face no.1 Valley Vista on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs. The game will be hosted by the Monsoon in Surprise.
