Continue ReadingRival schools Park Hills Central and North County met in the championship of the Mineral Area Activities Association Conference Tournament on Saturday night at Mineral Area College in Park Hills. The top seeded Rebels sprinted out to a 20-5 lead and held a big lead until the fourth quarter when North County battled back and cut the lead to six points. In the end, it was Park Hills Central taking a 62-48 victory for a third consecutive conference championship. Here is a look at the standout performers from both teams.
Park Hills Central
Sophia Horton 5’7″ (’21): The Lindenwood U. commit was easily the best player in the tournament as she topped the 20-point mark in all three games, included a game-high 26 points in the championship game. She is a versatile performer who can get it done from anywhere on the floor. She dominated the offensive boards in the first half for buckets. She can can attack the basket, knock down jumpers and drop dimes to open teammates with his passing and high basketball IQ.
Kaley Kimball 5’10” (’21): On a team without a lot of size, Kimball is the tallest player on the team, but she stands out with her versatility. She scored 15 points in the championship game victory. She has the length to gets steals and blocked shots on the back end of the Rebels’ full-court press. She works the baseline well for buckets on the offensive end plus she can knock down open 3-pointers. She is very mobile as she gets out on the break for transition baskets.
Avery Norris 5’7″ (’20): The veteran floor general is a defensive gem who is fun to watch on the front end of the Rebels’ full court press. She has good anticipation to play the passing lanes to go along with a set of quick hands to pick pockets and take away the basketball. She does a good job of advancing the basketball and keeping the pace at a high tempo for her team.
North County
Kamryn Winch 6’3″ (’22): The young post player is a formidable player in the paint area with her size and physical strength. She had 14 points and 13 rebounds in a victory over previously unbeaten Ste. Genevieve in the semifinals and a team-high 12 points in the championship game. She is very good at establishing her post position and she catches the ball well and will play bully-ball to get to the basket to score.
Kayleigh Winch 6’1″ (’20): The Mineral Area College commit had a productive weekend in leading the Raiders to the championship game. She was dominant in the semifinals against Ste. Gen with a game-high 21 points. In the championship game, she battled foul trouble, but she still scored 11 points and rebounded well. She has very good post moves along with some mobility and ball handling skills.
Ella Gant 5’8″ (’21): The junior combo guard is a good athlete who did a nice job of playing the game with a lot of pace. She made a lot of good things happen in the open court as she pushed the tempo and created some open opportunities for her teammates with her passing on the run.
