So here is my best guess as to which ladies will be named finalists when they’re named later this month. Just a reminder, all regional player of the years have to be Seniors so no underclassmen are included in these.
First Region: Charlee Settle, Calloway County – Her team may not win the region but Settle is the most valuable player in the region, averaging a double-double every night out.
Second Region: Emilee Hope, Henderson County – Hope is having a very strong season and leading her team in almost every category while her team is a top contender in the region.
Third Region: Hannah McKay, Owensboro Catholic and Kendall Wingler (tie) – McKay is having a big year and leads the best team in the region. Wingler is having an absurd year scoring the ball and is likely the best pure scorer in the state. I predict that somehow (wink, wink) the vote is a tie and both get to attend the ceremony.
Fourth Region: Elizabeth Bertram, Barren County – Bertram is one of the best players in the state that no one ever talks about.
Fifth Region: Whitney Hay, Elizabethtown – Hay has missed a third of the season but she has put up big numbers for her entire career and should be honored as the top Senior.
Sixth Region: Taziah Jenks, Mercy – There is a possibility she ends up splitting the vote with teammate Hope Sivori but Jenks likely gets the nod in a very strong region.
Seventh Region: Erin Toller, Sacred Heart – Coming back from an injury, Toller has returned to form and is leading the top ranked team in the state. The region is loaded with talent but she probably gets the nod from coaches.
Eighth Region: Mattie Vickers, Simon Kenton – The player of the year in the 8th is wide open. I really don’t know who wins so I’ll go with the leading scorer on the best team.
Ninth Region: Maddie Scherr, Ryle – The presumed favorite to win 2020 Miss Basketball, she should win player of the year in the 9th, possibly unanimously.
Tenth Region: Kennedy Igo, George Rogers Clark – Igo has had a fantastic career to this point and is likely the heavy favorite to win the player of the year this season.
Eleventh Region: Morgan DeFoor, Scott County – DeFoor has had a HUGE season for the Lady Cards and likely the nominee in the 11th. Her teammate Malea Williams could cause a vote split but it’s unlikely.
Twelfth Region: Regi Cundiff, Southwestern – The best player on the best team in the region, Cundiff will look to end her career at Rupp Arena after a runner up finish last season.
Thirteenth Region: Amerah Steele, South Laurel – Steele has had a big season and has been a tremendous player her whole career. A worthy winner. Kaylee Mathis of Clay County could split the vote here too.
Fourteenth Region: Hailey Smith, Wolfe County – Another scoring machine, Smith has had a great career and should end it as the 14th region MVP.
Fifteenth Region: Kirsten Cole-Williamson, Pikeville – Following the “best player on the best team” theory, Cole-Williamson is having a strong season and has Pikeville in position to get to Rupp Arena.
Sixteenth Region: Julia Parker, Ashland Blazer – Along the same lines as Cole-Williamson, Parker is the standout Senior for the top rated team in the 16th.
