A 5’6 guard, Hutley is averaging 14 points and four assists and entered her senior season with 779 career points. She helped her team finish the season 22-4 and helped Wabaunsee place third at the Kansas 2A state championships.
She can play either guard spot and started out playing the point at for Wabaunsee, which she says has helped her game grow.
“I love playing a 2-guard, but I will always think like a point guard and that helps me focus on more than just scoring, but how I can get others open for easy shots and make thread-the-needle passes,” she said. “I have also been blessed with coaches who have taught me fundamental defense and I love playing aggressive on-ball defense.”
Hutley opened the season by helping Wabaunsee start the 2019-20 season undefeated, but suffered an ankle injury that kept her out of the line-up for a long stretch this season. She has since returned and put together some big games in wins over Lyndon and Rossville.
“I have been working hard to gain momentum in the first games of the season and my ankle injury delayed this a bit, but I definitely have room for improvement and will have to work extra hard to get back and make the improvements to my game to get where I need to be for the postseason,” Hutley said. “I have a lot of work to do and my game is not where I want it to be. “
Hutley says the biggest influence to her basketball career has been her mom.
“Through all the good and bad, she has held steady and been there for me,” Hutley said. “She has been supportive, but has not been afraid to tell me things I may not want to hear at the time, but need to. One of my strengths has been my work ethic, and without a doubt, she has helped develop a strong work ethic in me.”
Hutley says she has always enjoyed playing basketball more than watching basketball. She says she enjoys watching NBA star Steph Curry as well as other players during the summer.
“I enjoy watching other girls I have played with at Wabaunsee and on my summer team, Wheat State Elite, play at the collegiate level,” she says.
Hutley has signed to play at NCAA Division II program Washburn.
“I am eager to learn what I need to do to make this happen and get to work there,” she said. “Though I am not sure of a major, I am looking at something in the sports medical field. I really liked the style of basketball they play; fast paced with aggressive defense, the coaches, and the other players.
“I want to find my role on the team and do my best to fulfill that role. I think some of my strengths are my understanding of the game, the way I see the floor, and my fundamental defense.”
