Here’s a look at Region 2
Favorite: Thompson
The Tommies are the No. 2 seed in the region and lost to Grafton/St. Thomas during the regular season, but until the Spoilers do it in the postseason, this is still the team to beat. Thompson has one of the best backcourts in Class B in junior guards Kaia Sorby and McKenzie Hughes. Hughes is an all-stater who can score at a high rate, spearhead an elite defense and make plays for her teammates. Senior forward Macy Jordheim is one of the best forwards in the region and a potential double-double every time she takes the court. The Tommies don’t have the most explosive offense, but they’ll be in every game because they have arguably the best defense in Class B.
Contender: Grafton/St. Thomas
The Spoilers are ranked in the top-five and look good enough to win multiple games in the state tournament if they are able to get there. If Grafton is getting to state, it’ll likely have to go through Thompson – the team that’s ended its season the last two years. The Spoilers play terrific defense and have the necessary experience to go a long way. Carlee Sieben is arguably the best player in the region. Julia Dusek is a really good all-around player on both ends of the floor and Cassie Sieben is an excellent third option.
In The Mix: Midway/Minto, Park River/Fordville-Lakin
Midway/Minto advanced to the quarterfinals in Region 2 last year and seem equipped to make an even deeper run this time around. Sitting at 15-6 on the year, the Mustangs are the No. 3 seed in the region. All-region junior guard Elizabeth Schanilek is a terrific all-around player and April Schmitz and Kennday Slominski are rock-solid pieces.
Park River/F-L finished third in the region a year ago and while the Aggies aren’t as strong as they were a year ago, they’ve got the experience and talent to win multiple games. Josie Brodina and Gigi Brouillard are two really solid all-around players who can create their own shots, make the game easier for their teammates and defend.
