Not only are there a pair of top-five teams in Langdon/Edmore/Munich and Four Winds/Minnewaukan, but there are a handful of highly-talented clubs that appear poised to compete deep into the tournament.
Here’s a look at Region 4
Favorite: LEM
The Cardinals are undefeated on the season and may be the favorite to win the state title.
They won Region 4 last year, cruising through the tournament with relative ease. And that whole group is back for another run. They’ve got an elite defense, great size, athleticism, experience and skill. Callie Ronningen is one of the best players in Class B and working on another all-state season. Kaitlynn Scherr is an experienced lead guard who can score and make plays. Sophomore wing Morgan Freije has enjoyed a breakout season and the Cardinals have a pair of rock-solid two-way juniors in Kaylee Lowery and Lexi Olson.
Contender: Four Winds/Minnewaukan
The Indians have been one of the best teams in Class B for years, yet can’t seem to get over the hump (LEM is the hump) in recent years. They are good enough to do it this year despite losing a game against the Cardinals earlier in the season. Few teams have the kind of offensive talent the Indians have and while they are young in some spots, they are simultaneously experienced. Latasha Bellile is one of the best individual players in the region and a potential all-state guard. Riah Littleghost has been productive on both ends of the floor and is a jack-of-all-trades. Myona Dauphinais is one of the most explosive scorers in the region and can get hot in a hurry.
In The Mix: St. John, Dakota Prairie
The Woodchucks haven’t been great this year but remain formidable because of high-end individual talent in the form of junior guard Kendra Prouty and freshman forward Natalie Decoteau. Prouty is a stat-sheet stuffer, averaging 17 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and seven steals while Decoteau has enjoyed a terrific freshman season, averaging 15 points, 12 rebounds and nearly five assists.
Dakota Prairie advanced through districts and looks like a team that has the talent to advance in the region tournament thanks to a solid, experienced core. Carly Lippert and Shaye Frederick are all-region caliber pieces who can score, make plays and defend at a high level. Sophomores Paytan Lippert and Marit Ellingson have developed nicely in their roles as well.
