The Tigers won the regional championship last year and head into the region tournament with an undefeated record and dominant wins over just about every other team they played. Will the Tigers cruise through the region tournament like they did in districts?
Here’s a look at Region 8
Favorite: Trenton
The Tigers head into the region a perfect 22-0 and winning by an average margin of more than 35 points per game. They’ve been dominant on both ends of the floor all year, utilizing excellent size, athleticism, depth and versatility. Kaity Hove is the engine on both ends of the floor at the point guard spot. She’s an all-state lead guard who can put up triple double numbers with her ability to get to the paint and score, rebound and facilitate. Alyssa St. Pierre and Alexa St. Pierre provide athleticism on the wings and can wreak havoc on the defensive end of the floor. Jacee Turcotte is a solid complementary scorer and rebounder and Kella Norby and Rachel Archer are solid role pieces. This team has all the pieces to not only win Region 8, but make a run in the state tournament.
Contender: Kenmare
Kenmare won the District 16 Tournament, crushing the competition. The strength for the Honkers is undoubtedly their depth, defense and balance. They allow just 37 points per game. Kate Zimmer is one of the best players in the region despite being just a freshman. Brenna Skoglund is another excellent youngster and there’s an excellent core of upperclassmen in place with Megan Zimmer, Ashley Bauer and Sierra Skar.
In The Mix: Mandaree
A blowout loss to Trenton notwithstanding, the Mandaree Warriors have been terrific this season. They are 17-4 with a pair of losses to the Tigers but they’ve got the firepower to make an extended run and get another crack at Trenton if they can take care of the ball. They’ve got a great group of upperclassmen, with the requisite experience and toughness to turn things on at this point in the year. Daysha Serdahl is a productive interior player and Cherish Johnson, Francesca Ross and Jessee Vigen have all had good moments on the perimeter.
