Each of these teams have been strong overall, behind some talented college prospects that are also overlooked to a degree. With a focus on the 3A class, here are some sleeper teams and players to be on the lookout for.
Yelm HS
Record: 13-5
RPI Ranking: #18
Outlook: The Tornadoes have been on a roll with a five game winning streak leading up to their big matchup with Gig Harbor who beat them earlier in the year. Both teams are 10-2 in league and will look to secure the number two spot in league before entering playoffs. Yelm is led by senior standout Maddie Plevyak who is one of the best scorers in the South Sound Conference. She has been good for over 18 points per game as well as three assists and three steals. Plevyak is committed to playing at Pacific Lutheran University. They will be getting an impact player in their program for the next four years.
Franklin HS
Record: 12-5
RPI Ranking: #16
Outlook: The talk of the Metro League has surrounded Eastside Catholic and Garfield all year, but there are multiple other teams that have put together solid seasons so far and the Quakers are one of those teams. They are currently 9-4 in league play and beating all of the teams they should be. Not too many people were talking about them being a top 16 team in the state before the season started, but here they are with a chance to put themselves in a good position headed into playoffs. 2021 5’6 SG Shaunice Reed has consistently been a high level scorer for Franklin since her freshman season. Reed is always in attack mode and she has led Franklin in scoring at 16 points per game and she also grabs five rebounds and three steals per game.
Capital HS
Record: 15-3
RPI Ranking: #11
Outlook: Capital is on a 8 game winning streak and remains undefeated in league play (12-0) with just two more games to play. With two more wins, they could squeeze into a top 10 ranking. 2020 5’11 SG/SF Nicole Lindblom is not necessarily a household name around the state, but opponents in the South Sound Conference are very well aware of her and her 17 points and nine rebounds per game averages. A versatile player, Lindblom also gets more than one block and one steal per game as well. She currently holds offers from Jucos and is being recruited by D3 schools throughout the Northwest Conference.
Hudson’s Bay HS
Record: 16-4
RPI Ranking: #15
Outlook: Another Vancouver area team that is not being talked about in the Seattle and Spokane areas, but has a chance to make a name for themselves here very soon. They currently sit at 16-4 on the season and have just two more league games, including a big end of regular season battle with Prairie. This team has a good amount of talent between 2021 5’11 SF Jaydia Martin, 2021 5’10 PF Kamelai Powell and some talented sophomores. Martin is a D1 prospect averaging over 22 points and 10 rebounds per game. She also snatches nearly five steals each contest. This team has the star power and talent to make noise at Districts and the Tacoma Dome if they start clicking at the right time.
