Conference play began, and it told us lot of what the post-season tournaments will be like. This season has already given us several fantastic games and noteworthy performances from all years, so the rest of the season and playoffs should be just as good. I’ve yet to do a piece on the post players, so here’s a couple of forwards who’ve consistently impressed or developed throughout the season.
Mia Chapman (Madison, 2022)
There are many scary things—for opponents—about the Warhawks (20-0), but the scariest thing might be the fact that many of their talents are only sophomores. This includes Mia Chapman. With so much attention being given to the Makrigiorgos and Arnolie sisters on the perimeter, Chapman has held it down in the paint for Madison and been a solid sixth man for them inside. She has the ability to make an impact on the offensive and defensive end, doing whatever the Warhawks need her to do in the post from night to night.
Marya Mufti (Langley, 2020)
Mufti boxes out in a game against Flint Hill. Photo courtesy of Twitter.Mufti has slowly but surely evolved into a great centerpiece for the Saxon offense, which has been beautiful to watch at times this season. Langley evenly distributes their scoring fairly well from game to game, and Mufti has demonstrated her ability to score in the post and run the pick and roll nicely with their guards.
Abby Pesansky (Woodson, 2020)
Pesansky during a contest against West Springfield.Pesansky is exactly the kind of forward you love to see at the high school level, not afraid of contact. Woodson’s seniors have been a pleasure to watch this season, and she given it her all in her last year by the way of 76 field goals and 147 boards. Makes sense, because she is around very often for putbacks.
Mackenzie Matheny (West Springfield, 2022)
Matheny shoots a free throw in a game against WT Woodson.Matheny definitely needs to be on watch by recruiters as she wraps up her impressive sophomore campaign. She is a true post, and averaging about 17.2 points per game to lead a very talented team. Not afraid to get down low and be physical in the post.
