Continue ReadingI love runs, not like individually by myself, but in games and this was definitely one of those types of games in which the underdog never gave up. Summer Creek is the defending Region 3 champ and after seeing them earlier in the season, the only team with a chance to stop year before last Region 3 champ, Cypress Creek, from heading to state and that game, should it happen, is one round away after their 56-45 win against George Ranch but before that happens, they have to face Beaumont United who surprisingly beat Clear Falls to advance. I actually shouldn’t say that because I hadn’t seen United but this is the internet and so much is said that’s sort of make-believe but I definitely will be at that game
Tyanna Sherman & Isabella LittleSummer Creek jumped out to a 17-6 lead after one and sometimes you need unsung heroes to step up and Tyanna Sherman came off the bench to score 7 of those 17. I didn’t keep stats, but that definitely was a boost that got the Bulldogs off and running and they extended their lead to 29-14 at the half as the heavy hitters got going. Mailyn Wilkerson (Trinity Valley JC) is known for her long-range shooting yet her aggressiveness on defense as well as her passing was huge. Alayia Francis just wouldn’t crack under pressure and believe me George Ranch brought it, but she and Adaora Nwokeji apply so much pressure themselves, both can shoot the three and Nwokeji’s acrobatic shots were on full display. Kaitlyn Duhon’s energy and athleticism has always impressed and the talented sophomore keeps adding things that may not show up on the stat sheet while Maliyah Johnson (Texas A&M) just keeps filling that same stat sheet up as she was at times unstoppable offensively and at 6’3, she can score many different ways
This was my first look at George Ranch this season and I’m glad it worked out that I catch them because Jaedyn Dunn (Fisk) has always been one of my favorite players since I first saw her in elementary school when I used the phrase “she ain’t DONE” and believe me, she helped lead runs to keep it going by either applying pressure on defense or hitting big shots to change momentum as speaking of doing that, Savannah Velazquez joined Dunn in the #sizedontmatter when you can play group. Gabrielle Owens was her usual self, scoring and rebounding as well as defending, Isabella Little played big in the second half and helped ignite the team but on of the most athletic girls in the state, Amillion Fowler just continues to amaze me and as she was flying through the air defying gravity, I kept thinking to myself, this could be an upset, especially after seeing the performance of Rachel Okoye who has one of the best stop and pop jumpers going around. That mid to long-range and attacking the basket combined with her defense did not go unnoticed and she’s a sophomore that has just been added to the 2022 Watch List
