The Eastern Midlands (Elkhorn) and the Central 10 (Crete) kept things the status quo in their respective leagues, while Lincoln Christian gained a measure of revenge against top-ranked Hastings St. Cecilia in the Centennial Conference final. In Class A, things stayed pretty much the status quo, as it did in the smaller classifications. Oakland-Craig made a great statement in our state-wide game of the week by knocking off Humphery/ Lindsay Holy Family by 15 points, while Falls City Sacred Heart continues to march along in D2.
THREE THINGS I LIKE:
- Crete made another statement in the Central 10 Conference Tournament, winning the championship game in an impressive 62-18 routing of Grand Island Northwest, the third time that the Cardinals have convincingly put away the defending champion Vikings this season. Morgan Maly, perhaps the state’s best player, tallied 59 points in the semifinal and finals combined.
- Millard West is right smack dab in the middle of a gauntlet, and they dropped two heartbreakers last week to Westside (40-29) and Lincoln East (62-62 in overtime). Hannah Leo had a great week for the Wildcats, averaging 18 a game in those two losses. Marc Kruger’s squad is not deep, but their top five players can play with almost anyone in the state and will be a tough out in a one game playoff for a state tournament berth.
- Congatulations to Syracuse for winning the Capitol Conference Tournament championship, defeating a very hot Wahoo club 56-53 on Saturday. Lauren Meyer had 18 points for the Rockets, who moved to 13-5 in the campaign. This could be a great momentum builder for Syracuse with district play just a couple of weeks away.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: One of the more sought-after players in the state is Fremont sophomore Taylor McCabe, and she proved again last week why almost every Division I school in the region has already offered her a scholarship. McCabe lead the Tigers to two wins this past weekend, running their record to 15-4 all-together (12-3 against Nebraska competition), filling the stat sheet up for Fremont. McCabe averaged 25.5 points, 9 rebounds and four steals a game last weekend, and the Tigers are starting to come together at the right time.
GAME OF THE WEEK –> LINCOLN-OMAHA CORRIDOR: Three or four squads have perhaps distanced themselves from the pack in Class A, and two of these programs are slated to meet up Friday night when Lincoln Pius X goes to meet Lincoln East. Lincoln East attacks their opponents for the full 94 feet, and both squads are driven by their perimeter players like Charley Bouvaid and Taylor Searcey, while Pius rides the strength of its inside/out game of Alexis Markowskil and Jill Aschoff. This should be a dandy of a rematch Friday night, with the Spartans looking to avenge a 60-48 defeat in the conference tournament a month ago.
GAME OF THE WEEK –> STATE-WIDE: Central Nebraska has a lot of talented teams in the area this year, and local teams in the smaller classifcations are having outstanding seasons. A local rivalry is renewed Tuesday night when Hastings St. Cecilia travels to regional rival Hastings Adams Central. Don’t let Adams Central 11-8 record fool you; all but one of their losses have been to either ranked teams or Class B squads, and most of those games have been very competitive. Look for another great one Tuesday night!
