As history has showed us the underdog always has a chance in the postseason. Below I give three bold predictions that could potentially happen, but are not likely in Saturday’s regional games.
Someone Other Than Northwestern Comes Out Of the Marion Regional
Northwestern comes into the weekend with an outstanding (26-0) record with big wins over some of the states best programs and several out of state powerhouse teams. Fishers will take on Northwestern in game one. Fishers comes into the matchup (23-1) and a big underdog. In order to take down Northwestern Fishers is going to have to put points on the board throughout the whole game. In the sectional championship against HSE Fishers only scored five points in the first quarter. Tomorrow they are going to have to find a way to get their offense moving early if they want to put themselves in a position to win the game.
Homestead (25-1) plays Fort Wayne Carroll (17-6) who they previously defeated 67-29 in December. I see them winning big again Saturday. As for the regional championship vs Northwestern more than likely. I think Homestead will give Northwestern their biggest test to date. Players like Ayanna Patterson, Sydney Graber, and Grace Sullivan should give Northwestern’s loaded lineup a run for their money. I think this one comes down to who takes care of the ball and is hitting the outside shot.
Triton Central Gets Upset
Triton Central has been on a roll this season as they come into the weekends regional games with a perfect (24-0) record. With that being said there are several teams in the Southmont regional who could pull off the upset. Covenant Christian is one of those teams. They come into the weekend fresh off an upset sectional title win as they knocked off (22-2) University last Friday night. Triton Central won the first matchup between the two teams 64-51.If Covenant Christian wants to pull this one off they will need big performances from IIani Williams-Harris and Sania Borom. As well as production from role players like Samara Douglas and Bonnie Lew Wudlow.
Shenandoah is another team that cannot be overlooked in the Southmont regional. They come into the day with a (23-3) record. They are a tough group who knows how to close out games. Shenandoah will need big performances from juniors Kathryn Perry and Erikka Hill if they want to have a shot at taking home the regional championship tomorrow night.
Ashlynn Brooke Leads Pioneer to a Regional Championship
Brooke’s freshman season has been highly anticipated by many people around the area and throughout the state. Back In the summer Brooke suffered a significant knee injury that had the potential to sideline her most of her freshman season. The good news for Pioneer fans is she is back and coming into full form. She’s averaging 13 PPG while shooting 53% from three along with averaging 3 steals. Her minutes have been limited as she has returned from her injury. Brooke will likely see big minutes in a huge matchup against fellow 1A top 5 team Oregon Davis. She has played up in AAU for several years so she is no stranger to older players. If Brooke can get going from the outside and be a big factor defensively Pioneer should be able to take home the hardware Saturday night.
