Continue ReadingI love heat, especially when the weather changes but the heat from last night’s game had several players step up under the bright lights, excellent lighting in The Armory, and put everything on the line. Many players that stood out are already among the Top 100 players from various classes and there were others that will be listed but here are the top performers from last night
College Station
Rebekah Hailey-G -definitely one of the top UNSIGNED players in the state, her range starts a few feet after she crosses midcourt but her poise, especially under pressure just impresses me as she not only is the straw that stirs the drink, she actually can pour it all over as it trickles down amongst her teammates. I also loved her playing lane which gives her advantage as she can score multiple ways
Na’layjah Johnson-G- from where she was when I first saw the junior 6 years ago shows what hard work and determination can do and when you talk about pressure plays, well she shows up on both ends. I’m thinking back to their playoff game in Houston last year as she was unconscious and since then, she still hasn’t awakened or better yet, she’s given the defense nightmares as she’s scoring from deep and off the dribble
Aliyah Collins-G- one of the states top sophomores simply does so much that doesn’t always show up on scoresheets but last night’s effort definitely did. She reads defenses well and can navigate the offense and her stop and pop midrange creates problems because of her first step which can be devastating as she blows by defenders with ease
Jaeden McMillin-F-the freshman was impressive and her performance falls into to the “it’s not what you do, it’s who you do it against” category and after seeing her earlier this season in a fall league game, she has definitely came into her own on both ends of the floor. How much did I like her? She will be added to that magical 2023 Watch List on my next update
Rudder
Tianna Mathis -F-the talented junior just gets the job done on both ends of the floor as she can not only score from mid to long-range but take defenders off the dribble and with her body control and strength, she’s an “and one” waiting to happen. She sees the floor, makes crisp passes on the money and her unselfishness stands out, as well as her defense
Keaundra Kelly-F-it seems like I’ve also been watching her forever and over those 6 years of watching the junior basically be a back to the basket player nicknamed “Key” she’s unlocked that outside game from deep and when you stand a shade under “the magic number” which is 6’0, has a college-ready body, rebounds on both ends and can defend in the paint and on the perimeter, need I say more
Asani Magee-F-two minutes of watching the sophomore had me scrolling for her name as I’m thinking “how did I miss her” and after being informed she played “club ball” sparingly last season, I got it and I have her now as she will be added to the 2021 Watch List. There are athletic players all over but she’s ultra-athletic, plays passing lane, elevates over defenders easily and creates her shot off of the dribble
