I hadn’t seen PGH Texas Top 100 freshman Kameryn Phillips and I wanted to see Atascocita’s Top 100 seniors Elyssa Coleman and Dede Davis one more time so even though it was wet, chilly and plenty of traffic, I made it and was I glad because several players stood out
Atascocita
Elyssa Coleman-virtually unstoppable, she had to have over 20 and a double-double but just watching her energy throughout the entire game told me she is playoff ready and she wants to make a run before she takes her talent to the University of Texas. She’s one of those players I caught young and knew she had the size and tools to do well yet she has exceeded my expectations by hard work and desire and as I go back to that word “unstoppable” this team could make some noise
Dede Davis-one of the best-unsigned guards in Texas, her first step is scary and she has “ups” and showed it by pinning a defender on the backboard last night which from expertise and knowledge of the game, was a clean block but I’m biased because you will not outwork her and her desire and determination to come back to the level in which she first impressed me speaks volumes about her and her game. She can shoot the long ball, attack off the dribble and defend
Kyleigh McGuire-unsung hero that just makes plays and played the passing lane several times, hit numerous big shots and grabbed a lot of rebounds but her poise throughout the game helped Atascocita stay on top for most of it. Good body and strength, as well as defends inside as well as on the perimeter
Humble
Kameryn Phillips-status keeps rising as she set it off, off of the top exploding to the basket fearlessly and that energy trickled down to her teammates as they played as if they felt like they could pull it off. She has played the passing lane and attacked since I called her a #D1Lock in what, 4th or 5th grade, I’d have to check yet I knew it was coming and that as well as her pull-up jumper creates plenty of problems for defenders and the freshmen is just giving a taste of what’s coming
Keona Chatman- she hit a clutch shot after clutch shot to not only stop the momentum but to change it throughout the game and was ice down the stretch. The midrange, the long-range, attacking off of the dribble and playing hard defense, including that ever so important playing of the passing lane helped not only fuel the comeback but the win itself
Supporting Cast
Natia Hagan, Omuria Jackson, Kazarea Taplin and Jashya Wortham all played pivotal roles at one point or another, some numerous times as this squad just put it together and made a tremendous comeback, down 14 I think in the second half to win the game. Hagan’s steal, she played the passing lane, led to them taking a 50-48 lead and probably gave them the mindset that they could could actually pull this off on the road, and they did.
This district has a chance to sweep the first round, definitely can get three but the game is played on the court, so let’s play as I’ll breakdown 22-6A before the playoffs later this evening
