Otherwise, you might just miss Colts senior Jada Dupree flying by for a bucket after poking away a pass from the opposing team.
The speedy senior was the fastest girl in Pueblo a season ago as the point guard has also been a standout on the track, as seen by winning the South-Central League title in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dash in 2019.
″(Dupree) creates a lot of points for us, and not just for herself individually,” Pueblo South coach Shannon Patterson said. “When she gets out, she gets a steal and everyone is running up the court, it gives us another advantage and another opportunity to get a basket.”
Pueblo South’s Jada Dupree scores on a breakaway layup against Pueblo Central.Defense and speed has been the name of Dupree’s game during her varsity time in her sophomore and junior year, but averaging over 18 points a game is something she has added for the 2019-2020 season.
“She’s shooting a lot more 3s this year to make teams respect that so it’s giving her a couple more opportunities to get to the rim,” Patterson said.
Dupree has shown her maturity over the season, starting at the end of last year when she was the Colts leading scorer in the Class 4A state title game loss to Mullen.
From then on, Dupree has been the leader for the Colts, who are currently pushing to get a home playoff game this season despite the numerous losses from the roster a year ago.
“I had big shoes to fill and I’m getting there,” Dupree said. “I’ve learned to keep your head in the game, to stay strong, to just be in the moment. It’s everything I need right now.”
As for moving on to the college level, Dupree is ready to take whatever opportunity presents itself first.
The senior said she would be the first one in her family to ever receive an athletic scholarship, so whether it’s track or basketball, Dupree is ready to speed toward a yes.
“I think she’s going to be a good player if she does decide to go on to the next level,” Patterson said. “I don’t know if she’s going to choose track or basketball, but whatever she chooses, she’ll do great at.”
