Keenan High School – 53
VS
Marion High School – 33
Keenan is making their 3rd consecutive appearance in the State Championship game, 2018 in class 2A and the last 2 years (2019 & 2020) in Class 3A, they come into this game looking for the 2nd Championship in that time span. The 1 constant over that time is Freshman Guard – Milaysia Fulwiley Milaysia Fulwiley 5'8" | PG Keenan | 2023 State #9 Nation SC , she will play a major role in the outcome of this game. Marion is making their 1st appearance in the Championship game in quite some time & with their young roster I will not be surprised to see them make a run back to Colonial life arena in the near future.
From the tip you can tell that Milaysia was not going to let this one get away like last year versus Bishop England, she scored off the tip and then came back with another basket to make it 4 – 0 with under 2 minutes gone on the clock. Marion was able to get the ball out in transition and find Junior Wing – Kim’briel Barnes to get on the scoreboard to make it 4 – 2 with Keenan in the lead. The points will come few and far between for the rest of the 1st period for Marion as Fulwiley and her Keenan teammates would sprint out to a 12 – 6 Lead after the first 8 minutes. The key to Keenan is their pressure defense and ability to create turnovers, they really played together in the 1st half, forcing 18 turnovers from Marion that turned into 8 Points off the turnovers & they also added 10 fastbreak points. Milaysia Fulwiley Milaysia Fulwiley 5'8" | PG Keenan | 2023 State #9 Nation SC was truly dominant in the 1st half scoring 18 Points along with 5 Steals & 5 Rebounds, the halftime score had Keenan up 26 – 18 with Marion finding some balanced scoring through the 2nd period to keep themselves within 8 Points.
The final play of the 1st half was Milaysia Fulwiley Milaysia Fulwiley 5'8" | PG Keenan | 2023 State #9 Nation SC using a spin move to get into the lane and get a Buzzer Beater layup to close out the 1st half scoring, the 2nd half started off the same way, Milaysia Getting steals & layups in the open court. Marion continued to have issues finding consistent offensive possessions throughout the beginning of the 2nd half. Keenan – Junior – Forward – Tamyra Davis – added a great drive and dish to Senior – Guard – Brooklyn Woods that increases there lead and pushes the 3rd quarter lead out to 41 – 30, the 4th period saw Keenan pick the defense up to another notch and held Marion to only 3 Points in the period to secure another State Championship, the 4th Overall in the career of Head Coach: Reggie McLain., Milaysia led the way with 29 Points, 8 Rebounds & 8 Steals.
