This is a really talented class that I am excited to see grow over the course of the next few years. The top five players for the class all have outstanding potential, as do many others that are ranked outside of the top five for now. That being said, there is still a lot of work to do and development will be key from here on out. Without further ado, here are Washington’s top five freshman in our initial rankings release.
Class of 2023: Top 5
1: 2023 6’4 PF Olivia Anderson Olivia Anderson 6'6" | PF Ellensburg | 2023 State #37 Nation WA (Ellensburg HS)
- One of the top college prospects in the country and barely scratching the surface of her potential. Olivia has outstanding length and runs the floor like a gazelle with some hops to match. She is capable of knocking down the mid range jumper and will step out and surprise the defense with an occasional three ball at times. Schools from the Pac 12, Big East, Ivy League and more are already in regular contact with her.
2: 2023 5’9 PG Mjracle Sheppard (Eastside Catholic HS)
- Schools in the Big 10, Big East, Pac 12 and more have been active on the phone lines and for good reason. Mjracle is an unselfish do-it-all type of player that is truly tough as nails. On her high school team this past season, she would guard the opposing team’s post, wing or point guard and hold her own at every position. She is an elite rebounder and great in the uptempo game.
3: 2023 6’1 SF Jenna Villa Jenna Villa 6'1" | SF Arlington | 2023 State WA (Arlington HS)
- Another clear Division 1 prospect in the 2021 class with her size and skill set at the wing position. The 6’1 small forward held her own at the state tournament playing against majority upperclassmen. Her ability to hit the outside shot at 6’1 and defend the 2-4 at the high school level makes her a great college prospect at this stage.
4: 2023 5’5 PG Malia Samuels Malia Samuels 5'7" | PG Garfield | 2023 State #46 Nation WA (Eastside Catholic HS)
- Malia may be small, but she plays with a huge heart on the floor. The uptempo game best suits her style of play where she can turn defense to offense and attack down hill using her speed. She is capable of hitting the outside shot to keep the defense honest when game planning for her downhill penetration.
5: 2023 6’1 SG Macey Huard (Bear Creek HS)
- A player who’s development over the course of the last year is undeniable. Macey plays a physical brand of basketball and has a great motor in her 6’1 frame. She is an above average outside shooter, making her the total package. Macey dropped competitive soccer to focus more on basketball in the last year and she made huge strides, passing up countless players that were ahead of her just a year and a half ago. Some Division 1 schools are already aware of her, but it is just a matter of time before her name is really out there. *Feature image
